I recently had to buy a Apple Superdrive for my MacBook Air. It worked beautifully and had the typical Apple design. A very thin band of rubber in a circle on the back, to hold the drive to wherever you place it on.

Can't think of a more efficient way to use minimum rubber and yet be so grippy. So Apple designers have thought every aspect of it.

Now, I tried it on my iMac and my iMac would not even recognize its little cousin. Then I found out that the Apple SuperDrive will only work on portable Apple computers! Ridiculous!

What If i wanted to copy a DVD without having to make an image which is cumbersome?

So after some googling, found a site that tells how to enable a flag in your boot list file that will enable your iMac to recognize the Apple SuperDrive. Details are posted below the post.

Meanwhile I also got hold a Samsung USB DVD drive for like 28 bucks. Tried that in my iMac and it works no problems.(Take that Apple! It worked out of the box with my iMac) But... that thing started spinning wildly and started making noise... vibration noise on my whole computer desk!!

The Apple Superdrive has just one USB cable whereas the Samsung had the Y Prong two USB cables, probably needs more power or the Apple Drive is designed to consume less power as its meant for portables anyway.

All in all the Apple Super Drive was very quite and smooth, its looks went along nice with my iMac. The Samsung was fast, but very very noisy !!!

Yes I have ton of CD's and DVDs, still !

Now regarding enabling the Apple Superdrive to work on your iMac, here it is,

Works like a charm !
