Apple suppliers are already working on display panels for second-generation OLED iPad models, The Elec reports.

OLED-iPad-Pro-Feature.jpg

Samsung Display is said to be in the process of negotiating prices for new Gen 8.5 OLED deposition equipment designed to make OLED display panels for devices like tablets. Samsung is reportedly planning to use the equipment to mass-produce Gen 8.5 OLED panels in late 2024 for the second-generation version of Apple's OLED iPad.

Apple has begun transitioning its iPad and MacBook lines to mini-LED displays over the last year, and OLED would be the next step after that. Unlike mini-LED displays, OLED panels use self-emitting pixels and do not require backlighting, which could improve contrast ratio and contribute to longer battery life on future iPad and MacBook models. Apple already uses OLED displays for its latest iPhones and all Apple Watch models.

The first-generation OLED iPad models, consisting of an 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro, are expected to use displays supplied by LG Display and Samsung, using existing Gen 6 OLED production lines. Moving to Gen 8.5 OLED panels for the second-generation of OLED iPads is more economical for larger devices than using Gen 6, which is better for smaller devices like smartphones, because it can yield more OLED panels per substrate.

The first OLED iPad models are purportedly scheduled to launch in 2024, so a late 2024 mass-production date for displays destined for second-generation models could situate their launch sometime in 2025.

Various Apple devices with Gen 8.5 OLED displays are expected to launch after the debut of the first OLED iPad. For example, a previous report placed the launch of the first MacBook with an OLED display in 2025, depending on the success of new 11- and 12.9-inch OLED iPad Pro models from the previous year.

in 2 months they will be working on the 3d generation
this fake leaks are so miss-leading for people that are not really in tech industry

Seems odd that they wouldn't be adding OLED to the upcoming iPad Pro's, while working on the 2nd gen. The timeline doesn't make much sense to me, but it's Apple. I have been a huge iPad guy and I am not sure I am ready to invest any longer given the lack of attention to iPadOS. iPhone and MacBook Air seems best for me.

I mostly use my iPad outside at work and I don’t think oled will cut it in the sun. LCD barely does
LCD handles glare significantly better over OLED. But either way you look at it, the sun poses a problem no matter what display panel you’re using.

The main observation I’ve found, is OLED seems to drain the battery faster when amped at max brightness compared to LCD.

OLED 2nd generation is welcome news! Let's have the best displays for Apple devices!
I was hoping microLED would make progress, so OLED would be skipped altogether for at least iPads.
It‘s not really the greatest if you have to accommodate the more rapid deterioration, and the compromise in pixel subtlety between low and absolute OFF

Big fan of OLED here but it remains to be seen if its longevity is suited to an iPad application with static screen elements and often very extended usage periods. I welcome this upgrade with enthusiasm but I'll certainly not be buying the first generation of OLED iPad. Had my fingers burned before with poor displays in Apple devices, and while OLED is excellent, it comes with certain caveats that mean a sage buyer should proceed with caution.

MicroLED is still very pricey and I doubt you’ll see it in the computer industry before it hits the TV market and becomes affordable which it’s yet to do.

Why do people continue to push OLED burn-in fear when they solved this issue years ago?

Been using OLED iPhones since they were a thing and I've had zero burn-in issues. I've had apps open for long periods of time on there and some had static elements.

I think burn-in for the most part is an issue that isn't much of a concern anymore.

So the worm has turned for you as well, eh? I hit my breaking point last year, held off on buying any sort of iPad Pro to replace my 2017 and after WWDC 2021 and how lackluster iPadOS 15 is, coupled with my love of my M1 13” MBP, it’s hard to get excited about the iPad much anymore. Apple pushed it one iteration out too far for a lot of us, IMHO.

Now my goal is to see how and if iPadOS 16 makes life any better or more productive with my 2017 iPad Pro. If it does, I might consider a newer iPad, if it ends up being a wash, I’ll use my 2017 until Apple stops supporting it and then see whether I even need an iPad at all. I’m not sure Apple realizes that they’ve alienated a lot of users with their pushing everything else to the side for the sake of the iPhone. I get it’s importance to the bottom line, and maybe it’s sales is the pillar everything is built off of, but some days I do resent how everything seems to orbit the iPhone.

Why do people continue to push OLED burn-in fear when they solved this issue years ago?
Because OLED zealots beat their chests on these forums about how everything else other than OLED is just junk and how Android phones look better and Apple sucks and how we’re all sheep and rubes and Apple is pulling one over on us and charging us more for an inferior experience and OLED is the only way, the only path and how all other display tech will fall before it. With that sort of proselytizing going on, one has to expect that certain factions, contrarians and agnostics are going to search for ANY flaw in what is deemed by someone else as “perfection”. It’s just human nature.

I'm not 'pushing' anything. I'm voicing a genuine concern based on personal experience. Nothing has been 'solved'. It has been mitigated. And it's not just burn-in anyway, it's colour shift, brightness loss and screen uniformity loss that brings about blooming and DSE at a 5-20% greyscale. I have personally witnessed an extremely expensive OLED television ruined by panel degradation after only three years of normal use. And I mean ruined..scrapped.

The likelihood of these issues occurring has been greatly reduced more recently, yes, but that is no rationale to discount the possibility of failures entirely. iPad is the perfect application to bring about such problems. I'm not saying there will be problems, but only a fool would dismiss the possibility on good faith alone.

OLED is amazing. I love it, but I can do that whilst also being mindful that, like all display tech, it has its downsides and thus it needs to be approached with full knowledge of its shortcomings. You are free to do as you wish but personally I'll be skipping the first generation or two and waiting to see how things go 👍

Yup, I had just been expecting a lot more by now. At this point, with how mediocre each update is, they might as well bring back Boot Camp and let M1 users dual boot. Even better for them, sell me a Magic Keyboard that switches automatically when docked. They could just be doing so much more and instead, they continue to milk their iPad users. I get it, it's a business, but I am ready to move on. The new Air is more than enough for my needs, and coupled with an iPhone, I can get by just fine. The use cases for iPad as is are dwindling to me.

After following quite a few of your posts over the past couple of years, that’s quite an indictment of Apple and their lack of awareness. I still use my iPad, but to a lesser extent I no longer try to create workflows for tasks that are just natural in macOS. Given that both David Sparks and Federico Viticci have moved their workflows back to macOS and Apple Silicon, I think Apple is at a real crossroads with the iPad. Hopefully, they’ll get their heads extricated from their orifice and get things back on track. Until then, I’m not spending any more good money on new iPads.
