Personally, I don't know much about heart rate beyond what it means for you. I stumbled upon this support page entitled, "Your heart rate. What it means, and where on Apple Watch you’ll find it. (Learn how Apple Watch measures your heart rate, and get tips for a more accurate reading.)" and I figured I'd share it to help anyone else who doesn't really know anything. Not that theres everything here but how you wear the watch matters if you want accurate heart rate readings, check it out..

The site reads, "every 10 minutes". That seems slow..? is it?

My heart beats once every ten minutes so makes sense to me :rolleyes::p

When you are in a "Workout," it will constantly read your heartbeat until you close the workout. This is probably the main usage of the heart rate monitor.

When you are not in a workout, it will check your heart rate every 10 minutes. Since most of this time you'll be sitting at work, sitting at home, or walking through the grocery store, keeping constant tabs on your heart rate is not as important.
