Found this deal online from here

MacMall has a deal on the Apple Time Capsule units: 3TB for $230, 2TB for $170. There are the Apple equivalent of a NAS that offers automated backup to the hard drive built inside a wireless router. These are a generation old but with plenty of storage and speed.

Wow, that's really tempting. But they don't say whether the units are brand new or in opened boxes or refurbished or what. Hmmm.

closeout of old model.

If it is a NIB closeout it's a very tempting price. Apple refurb is $299.

Anyone care to share how well that model work as an NAS? I'm tired of having 6 versions of an svg file spread across 3 computers and 2 firewire drives.

I haven't decided yet on older mini w/server, dedicated NAS, or time capsule. That price could swing my decision.

It's very solid and stable, though no speed daemon by any means. Nor does it offer any type of redundancy against drive failure.
Mac Mini beats it on both accounts plus adds other functionality.
TC's real virtue is being a target for TimeMachine backups. But I have to use 3 instances of them to achieve redundancy :D

Thanks for the info. The mini keeps coming up as the best option. It let's me keep my firewire enclosures for now while I wait on Sonnet, CalDigit, and/or Sunix to actually ship thunderbolt docks. (I don't like either of the Belkin or Matrox solutions.)

If the mini had two RJ45s it would be perfect.

With every day, my sympathy leans more and more towards Drobo 5D (TB + USB 3.0 DAS).
