Mockup of second-generation iPad spotted at CES
Digg founder Kevin Rose today noted that he has received information from a reliable source indicating that Apple will announce the second-generation iPad within the next 3-4 weeks, possibly on February 1st.
I have it on good authority that Apple will be announcing the iPad 2 in the next "3-4 weeks", possibly Tuesday February 1st. The iPad 2 will feature a retina display and front/back cameras.
In an update to the post, however, Rose notes that another source has indicated that while the display on the second-generation iPad will be of higher resolution than on the current models, it will not be a "Retina" display of the resolution seen on the iPhone 4 and fourth-generation iPod touch. A number of observers have noted that an iPad display at "Retina" pixel densities would be extremely difficult to achieve given the horsepower necessary to drive a display in the range of 2560 x 1920 pixels as would be required.

Rose has offered some accurate information over the years, most notably pinpointing a number of details of Apple's September 2008 iPod refresh. He has missed on several other predictions, however, suggesting that some caution should be taken with his most recent claims.

Rumors of a new iPad announcement come as Verizon is reportedly set to announce next Tuesday that it will begin offering the iPhone, with several reports pointing to an early February date for availability. It is unknown when the second-generation iPad would become unavailable under the scenario of a February 1st introduction, although many observers assume it will be close to the late March-early April timeframe of the original iPad.

Rose is wrong again. Assuming that the Verizon iPhone does come out around February 3rd, why would they take away that thunder with another announcement?

Next.

Would rather see the notebooks refreshed in that period of time instead of the iPad!

If the only features mentioned are the display and cameras, I wonder if that means we will not see a dual core iPad. Seems silly to me not to offer a dual core version.

A February 1st launch announcement for the iPad 2 would seem weird since it would detract from the supposed February 3rd availability of the Verizon iPhone. Given the hype and anticipation, I don't think Apple would lose anything putting off the iPad 2 announcement for the week after, which would make more sense. Plus, it'd allow them to boast about their Verizon iPhone sales.

Sounds about right as Stevie is a creature of habit and the iPad v1 was introduced on Jan 27 (I was there) press conference.

It won't be very much longer. Sometime between now and July.

Then you should also remember that they were not available until a few months later. It was announced early because it was a new product and developers needed time to create new ipad apps. That is no longer the case with the iPad2.

Expect an announcement no earlier than march.

Most iPad owners don't know what dual core means. Offering dual core is only a checkbox on a spec sheet; it isn't a meaningful feature to its users. A faster iPad, sure, but it doesn't have to be dual core.

Maybe a higher res display, but it will have to be a 4:3 ratio for current software to work, and it should be a useful multiplier of the existing resolution of 1024x768. After all, do we expect developers to have to make myAppResourceImage@1.5625x.png files to include in their apps?

Double the resolution is too big for current display hardware to drive in a way that won't kill the battery, so that leaves us with 1.5. Does anyone make 1536x1152 displays?

Why is everyone so sure that Verizon would announce its own iPhone, if its the same version with a couple tweaks then i predict that Apple is going to hold an event to announce both along with firmware 4.3 then Verizon will have a special event for the iPhone.

And btw, if the next ipad has a dual-core processor and hopefully 1 gb of ram \ than i don't think it'll have any problems running a retina display res. Considering the iPhone is capable of running in 1080p video, iPad 2 should be able to do it unless OS requires more processing power than video :apple:

Im tired of apple only doing the bare minimum when it comes to hardware refresh, the only thing thats keeping the iPhone on top is hardware/software unity and popularity + clean and simple designs.

Some iPad news! That's what I want to hear. Not some Verizon iPhone crap.

iPhone 4 is old news (about 8 months old). Congratulations Verizon users, enjoy your 4 now and I'll enjoy my 5 later.

But the sooner the better on iPad news!

I don't see Apple going with a non exponential resolution. All old apps would be blurry. I think they will wait until the iPad 3 to up the resolution, and make it twice that of the existing one.

iPhones, iPads, iPhones, iPhones, iPads…

What happened to OS X and Mac desktops? Oh, Apple released the Mac App Store, based on the, um, iOS App Store.

…I love that this article is using the same picture as an article about the possible next iPad just a few articles down...

"2560 x 1920 pixels as would be required"
This is why anybody who says the iPad will have a Retina display is a moron.
Not gonna happen for quite some time. That would be amazing, though.

I don't know, but they could well enough host an event and talk about the iPad 2, which would be available for retail later in February. Since Verizon has an event unveiling the Verizon iPhone next week, they won't be stealing any thunder by Apple hosting an event regarding the new iPads a couple days before February 3rd (for argument sake)

I agree. It will be suicidal for iPad sales to announce a V2 product in early Feb and make it available in March.

We will see the usual macrumors reports of dwindling inventories of iPad everywhere and then SJ's grand announcement of iPad 2 with immediate availability.

Kevin Rose has been wrong of late. Can't remember his last supposed product he claimed he knew was happening but it never came out.

I wouldn't call someone a moron on that. Apple can surprise with that although I believe such high resolution is actually not feasible on the iPad for now. My 27" iMac displays that resolution. Let's see how apple does it this time.

Rose has been wrong a number of times it's almost embarrassing to see his name still.

As for 3-4 Weeks. Nope. I think iPad will be on the same refresh cycle as iPhone. Yearly.

Cry some more.

kevin rose just posted on his site

UPDATE: Spoke w/another source, the display has a "higher dpi", but not technically a retina display. This seems odd to me, we'll have to wait and see..

Agreed. But there are higher res-displays now available at the right size/price for the next iPad. So, there will be an improvement. (Just not 300-DPI-level improvement. Not just yet.) I feel sure this new device IS coming soon, because Jobs & Company wants to take the phony wind out of the sails of all the clowns claiming their as-yet unreleased devices are 'iPad killers'.

You know. Just like all the iPod killers these jerkoffs were gonna release.
