I have the 11 pro with 256GB and Apple Care. I’m really digging the smaller size of the iPhone 12. As of now it’s what I’m wanting. If it ends up being a bit of a dud then I’ll just keep what I have as I don’t see any point in jumping for the pro model over this one.

How decent is Apple with their trade in prices and can I transfer my remaining year of Apple care to a new phone?

You can use the Apple trade-in calculator (https://www.apple.com/shop/trade-in) to see what you'd get for it, but keep in mind that value changes over time too. The Applecare goes with the device, not the owner so you can't transfer it to a new phone. If you paid for it upfront you can contact Apple to request a prorated refund.

You may want to also check with reputable trade-in vendors MacMeAnOffer.com and CashForYourMac.com for trade quotes. Unlike Apple, those two vendors will also give you more if you include an Applecare plan. The reason is those vendors will sell your device as used versus Apple will refurbish your device to sell in the Refurbished Store (where buyers can buy a new Applecare plan for it).
