Apple Trade Up program. Is it only for credit towards a new iPhone?

Hi guys,

I saw this on Apples site: http://www.apple.com/iphone/trade-up/

I was wondering if you go to the store if they give you a gift card for use in the store (like say if I wanted an Apple watch I could trade in my iPhone) or if it's only good towards the purchase of a new phone.

The "Instant Credit in Store" section makes it sound like its only for a new iPhone, but the "Get a gift card by mail" portion makes it sound like its a gift card.

Has anyone done this before?

I believe you're able to choose. Did this for my sister a few weeks ago. We went with the credit.
