Apple TV (3rd Gen) and Digital Audio

I am trying to stream digital audio from an iMac (late 2013) to a DAC. Can I do this with Apple TV? I am assuming I can do it wirelessly from the iMac to the Apple TV unit with iTunes and then a optical cable to the DAC. Can it be that simple?

Is there be any fee involved with Apple TV?
