I found my old 3rd Gen Apple TV today. It's missing the power cable but if the answer is yes to my question, I'll buy one off eBay.

1. Does it still work in 2022(I know not 4)
2. Does the new remote work with it?

Thank you for your time

The device works, but many apps are outdated and won't work. Since there is no app store it is up to Apple to relay any app updates. Last one was in Sept 2021.

The remote for the 3 was IR, lots of options out there for 3rd party replacement

I wouldn't invest a dime into it - you are better off putting that money into a 4 or later on ebay or marketplace

I watch Netflix and AppleTV with it on-device, but since it also works perfectly with AirPlay I use it with many other services from my phone and iPad. I also have the optical output sent to my stereo system and use it with my own collection and Apple Music (again, via AirPlay, they never brought Music to the ATV3).

I don't know how long Netflix will keep supporting the device, but with Airplay I expect it'll still work until I've upgraded the projector and TV to 4K.

Maybe you can download an app on the newer Apple TV's to replicate it, but I think the 3 was the last version to have the radio feature. I keep one hooked up to the TV in our family room just for that purpose. That was a really easy way to find music (I guess if you subscibe to Apple Music or Pandora or something, that wouldn't be a huge selling point).

The Apple TV 3 also has the Amazon Prime TV app, which I believe the 2's didn't, so that's also a nice feature. The device is old U& somewhat slow, but if you already have it, it's still a pretty great little device, and well worth hanging on to in my opinion. I probably wouldn't go out & buy a new one today, but I think it still serves a purpose if you already have one.

I use my Apple TV 3rd Gen to watch Prime, Netflix, Apple TV+, Apple Podcasts, Showtime and Starz.. It just received an update from Apple last week, although not sure what the update contained.
was that update safe?

I'm reluctant to upgrade because seems to me that every update sabotages the tv.

case in point, while selecting a mp4 TV show from the iTunes library found the mini,
the apple tv plays Aha "take on me" and the songs from that album.
all remotes are turned off and the tv is not next to the mini.

Everything seems to be working ok. I really can't find any info on what the update contains so not sure if it's bug fixes or security related

The problem with Apple TV 3 is that it uses a 32-bit processor, and app developers aren't eager to design apps for it, or update their existing apps. A lot of major streaming services like YouTube and Disney aren't on Apple TV 3. You're limited to Netflix, Amazon and Apple TV+.

IMO YouTube has lost it's luster and Disney+ content that I'm interested in could be blown through in 1 month.. No loss in my opinion..

I have two ATV3's sitting in the closet because I no longer have a use for them. But I always really liked them, the user interface is simple and quick to navigate with the old remote. It is also more consistently dark than dark mode on the newer models.

I would have kept happily using them but they don't support Sling, so I upgraded to a pair of ATV4's a few years ago when I subscribed.
