I grabbed a couple of the latest 2022 Apple TV 4K 128gb units from Costco online last week. In my house, we have 2x of the 2021 4K version and still use 1x of the 2017 4K version. All wired via ethernet.

If I replace any of my current boxes with the 2022, will the new one be noticeably faster? Maybe main benefit would be for replacing the 2017 and the crappy old remote? Thanks!

Faster at doing what? Have 2017 4K here and streaming apps run fine as they always have. If scrolling and sliding over icons important to you, then I imagine it will feel faster. I assume you don’t play games, otherwise you would have upgraded units sooner.

If anything, watching live TV and opening some of the apps I have like YouTube TV, Tablo, and ESPN (for sports on some Roku's that are slower, there's more delay, but ATV's have been pretty good as far as I can tell). I do not play any games on the ATV boxes (kids just do on PS5).

For basic streaming and app usage, you probably won't notice a performance difference. I would expect apps which support multicam or multi-screen (PIP) usage to benefit from a newer CPU & GPU.

If you want FaceTime support on Apple TV, you'll at least need the 2nd (2021) model. Depending how old your kids are, you'll especially appreciate this feature greatly for when they are away from home (college or whatever). Or if you FaceTime friends or relatives often. FaceTime on the big screen makes long calls much more enjoyable & less fatiguing on the eyes.

For device longevity considerations, note that Apple is starting to roll out tvOS features which may not be compatible with 1st gen (2017) ATV 4K models. ie. Live FaceTime translation, Karaoke features, and tvOS 26 Liquid Glass effects.

Hope this helps!

You have the old and the new Apple TV boxes, why don't you just use them to see whether it makes a difference for you?

My parents have the original 4k. It runs as fast and smooth as the iphone in my pocket or ipad. All of these things are snappy for the stuff they adn I do on a TV: watch stuff.

The hangup is normally wifi or internet.

I have a 1st gen AppleTV 4k, I put it in the office and the fast one in the living room. It took me about a year before I noticed I actually had them reversed.

I don't play games on it, and it's not like it can't maintain movie and TV shows FPS. However now that I swapped them I think the newer one is more consistently smoother in the UI.
