I have an Apple TV and a Samsung TV. I have always been able to hold down the home button on the Apple remote and selected sleep and it has always powered off my Apple TV and Samsung TV. I have CEC enabled on my TV. As I said this has worked perfectly until the last Apple TV software update. Is anyone else having this problem or corrected this problem that could share a fix?

Thanks,

I haven't run into this issue. One could always try a reset and reinstall that latest update again to see if it was some quirk in the install process.

Make sure the remote is fully charged... just in case.

Try unplugging both tv and aTV for 30 seconds, the plugging back in.
-- Theres's a reason "have you tried turning it off and back on again" is a meme.

check your TV settings, make sure it's still enabled
Check your aTV settings, make sure they're still correct, especially since you just did an update.
--- I've had settings randomly change on me, and updates can be bad about this.

If the setting on the aTV is correct, try changing it to something else, and back to the correct setting.
--- it's possible that the setting switch you control makes several changes in the background, One of those things might have gotten out of whack, while the rest are fine (including the switch position). Toggling the setting gets everything back in line

try unplugging both ends of the HDMI cable and plugging them back in.
- there is a handshake that happens between the devices that lets them know each others features, it's possible your aTV just "forgot" the TV can do CEC, this should reset it. Although the power cycle in step one should have fixed it

There is no way to re-install updates on the appleTV 4K

Make sure the remote is fully charged
The remote uses bluetooth to the appleTV,
The aTV then turns off the TV using commands over HDMI

if the remote is controlling the aTV, then the batteries are fine.

I have a Panasonic and the only way it will turn off the TV to to ask Siri to ''sleep Apple TV"

I just got the exact same problem some days ago. My Siri Remote wont turn on or off my Samsung TV anymore so I am stuck to use both remotes

Same problem; on LG TV with Simplink turned on. Was working perfectly on previous AppleTv but not now. Very frustrating.

I’ve had my TV for years with an Apple TV and it just stopped being able to power off my TV. This has worked for years prior. Yes I have CEC and the Apple TV is plugged into the ARC port. Tried different cables. Tried restarting / reconnecting the cables. This was caused by an Apple tvOS software software bug. 100%.

This happened after a recent update and you cannot downgrade. Apple just broke my hardware with buggy software. Super.

I have several Apple TV 4k units (the "original" 4k one), and they are plugged into:
  • A Samsung Frame via an Onkyo TX-NR609 receiver
  • A Vizio something-or-other (black friday deal TV) via a Klipsch soundbar
  • A Panasonic 4K projector via a Denon AVRX6400H receiver

At random times throughout the past ~4 years, those devices have failed to get powered off when the Apple TV gets powered off. Almost always, the receiver and soundbar power off, no problem, but the TVs and/or projectors can sometimes give trouble.

I always try the old power cycle, and sometimes that works, sometimes not. Sometimes swapping HDMI inputs helps, sometimes not (usually not). Almost always, I ignore it, bother with a second remote for a few days, and then it magically starts working again... I can't say if it's an Apple TV issue or actual TV issue. It reminds me of the random incompatibilities and issues that crop up with infotainment systems in vehicles when you go to a new iOS version...

Update: this took hours of research and troubleshooting, but I found the fix for my older TV post Apple TV OS update (that broke power controls).

We actually escalated an L2 case with Apple support and the official response was ‘We don’t support the power function to TVs as those are not Apple products…” in other words “You’re screwed, it’s not our problem and we won’t help”

Thankfully, we found the solution on support forums and confirmed the below fix worked (for us).

The HDMI cable needed to be unplugged from BOTH ends (not just the TV + Apple TV too), and we physically unplugged the power to the TV + Apple TV. Then plugged in the HDMI (both sides), connected the power and viola.

Apparently there is some code hidden either within the HDMI cable itself (e.g. firmware?) or within the TV’s firmware that can be corrupted by an Apple TV OS or firmware update - the only fix is to ‘reset/reseed’, which can only be done by following the above procedure (exactly). This is bizarre and I don’t fully understand how that’s possible (as we had tried disconnecting and reconnecting the cable from the Apple TV itself… and then later disconnecting the cable from the TV and plugging in (but not both at the same time), and when that did nothing in our initial troubleshooting, we moved on).

To be clear, we did not swap out our HDMI cable - just disconnected it on both ends and power cycled both devices.

Thank you! Had this very same issue with my parents setup, your guide solved the issue.

Thank you for this, it fixed the same issue I had as well.

I followed this to the T. Unfortunately it did not work. My problem appeared suddenly after the Apple Update. It no longer controls the power on the Samsung TV. I love the remote simplicity with Apple TV. But the Apple TV updates have been murderous. I had to throw one away because suddenly if forgets what speaker is connected and Closed Caption fails to toggle on and off. I bought the newest unit and it was restored but it worked for years with the old one. And now this one will no longer control power. Very frustrating. Maybe I will replace the HDMI cable completely before I give up.

I have an Apple TV 4K with a Sony Bravia TV. The Apple TV remote used to control the TV volume and mute but at some point stopped doing so despite several attempts to get it to. It still powers the TV on and off. We just got another Sony Bravia and again trained it on the IR remote only this one doesn't turn the TV on or off either. Baffled.
