Apple TV and streaming

So, i have been thinking should i get apple TV.

Thing is that i have 720p projector what i now connect macbook pro with HDMI cable as i watch movies. i would love to wirelessly stream series and movies from my mac.

Question is.. CAN i stream without iTunes?? let say VLC? and without adding all movies to iTunes?

Second part is.. What is better for my purpose Apple TV gen1 with harddrive? or Second Generation or should i just get this new one???

1. Get an ATV2
2. jailbreak it
3. install whatever you're more comfortable with (ATV Flash (black), XBMC or Plex) to bypass the whole iTunes-thing
4. do your thing.
