Can someone please explain the purpose of this app for me? I have cable, and watch lots of shows via the apps for those channels. When I use the Apple TV app to do this, it just opens up the app I would otherwise be using: what else should I be getting from it? Thanks!

It's a clearinghouse. One stop shop for any supported apps, so you can just go there to look for something to watch, rather than switch between different apps. Saves from checking to see where something is available also.

It acts as an intermediary for multiple apps. With select channels, you can subscribe within the app and it will allow native functionality like downloading of programs. It’s effectively a central TV guide so that you don’t have to jump from app to app to choose something to watch, but queue different content from multiple sources.
