iPod Apple TV as a surveillance device

I need to run a surveillance system which'll be unattended for long periods of time. So I'm looking at a Digital Video Recorder (e.g. AppleTV) and one or more IP-enabled, motion-activated video cameras.

Since others will have access to the AppleTV (including, possibly, the intruders!) I need to be able to password-protect and/or encrypt the stored video.

What kind of compatibility issues are there? Can this be done with an AppleTV?

Don't believe you can record with the TV.

AppleTV is not a video recorder. It is simply a TV interface for media already stored on your computer.

Yea, you'd probably be better off with a Mac Mini or a cheapo Windows system.
