I havent gotten an Apple TV yet because of this issue.

Anyone use an apple TV for their PC monitors that do not come with speakers?

The sound is apparently passed to the HDMI along with the video and you cannot separate or tap into the sound.

This works great for the TV because TVs generally have speakers. But not so much for computer monitors that only get video.

I have a bluetooth speaker but the sound will not be passed through to bluetooth or any other means while it is in airplay mode, as both audio and visual are passed through the HDMI cable.

The back of the Apple TV does have an optical audio function but I dont have audio sets with optical input. I know I can get a converter for it.

Anyway I am interested in what your solutions are for those with Apple TV and use it on their computer monitors.

That's your solution right there. Out of the box an Apple TV can output audio to anything that can recieve an optical audio signal. With the right converter (example below) you can output audio to virtually any set of speakers available anywhere.

I'm a bit confused as to why you'd connect an Apple TV to PC screen anyway ?

Anyway as above my Samsung Monitor has HDMI in and audio jack plug out so hopefully your monitor is the same.
