On my airport extreme im thinking about adding a hub to have my backup for my macbook and a new drive to store movies. I will have itunes organize that external from the macbook and sync the movies to the ATV. Question is I know the macbook HDD is covered with time machine but the external drive with the movies would be stored in two places on the external HDD and ATV. Question is if the external HDD with the movies fails can the media be pulled off the ATV and copied onto a new external HDD?

Not easily...as ATV was designed to mirror/sync with your iTunes libary, not work the other way around.

Just have your backup drive using Time Machine also back up the iTunes external drive, that way you WILL have a backup. I do that with my system, except my external is attached directly to my Mini and not AEBS. Makes no difference though.
