I recently bought a new iPhone .... so I have ATV+ for a year. But, It won’t work on my Apple TV 2nd gen. Won’t even airplay to 2nd gen. So, other than going into the office to sit and watch on my Mac, or iPad......what?
Since the Apple TV 2nd gen is outdated, should I spring for a new one or would a Roku or Fire TV box be smarter? I have Amazon Prime, so a Fire tv would work for prime movies, but no-matter....which one is best to add.....Roku, Fire4K, or Apple 4K?

I'm watching on Apple TV 4K using a 65" 4K OLED. The HDR is sublime, with beautiful colours and bottomless blacks. I've seen no compression artefacts or colour banding, even in dark scenes. Super impressed.

It's best viewed on AppleTV 4K for a number of reasons
  • 4K Dolby Vision Support
  • Dolby Atmos Support
  • For Sonos, has 5.1 Dolby Digital support
  • Native interface with AppleTV
Also, I think Apple supports a number of Amazon Apps.

I think the ATV4K is the best streaming box on the market, but it's also the most expensive. If you don't want to pay that much, I'd recommend a Roku which plays ATV+, Amazon Video and most other streaming services. Right now you can get the Roku Premiere 4K player for $30.

I got an AT4 at around launch - love it.

I heard that AT+ on Roku's is rather slow... Plus Roku requires a valid CC to use.

I had a Roku a while ago and it burned out - you get what you pay for...

ATV4 will be a hot item this year - I think last year on Thanksgiving they were $109.

Don't know about this year as you do get a free year of ATV+ with it.

AustinIllini is right.

From CNET's Apple's TV app is on Roku, Fire TV and Samsung, but only Apple devices get every feature:

Apple TV app with Apple PlusAirPlayWatch iTunes purchased content, Apple TV ChannelsBuy or rent iTunes movies and TV, subscribe to Apple TV ChannelsIntegrate non-Channels content (Hulu, ESPN, Prime video, etc.)Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos
Apple devicesYesYesYesYesYesYes

Amazon Fire TVYesNoYesNoNoNo

If you do not have Dolby Vision and/or Dolby Atmos setup, Samsung, Roku (TCL), and Amazon probably provide more or less the same experience for watching Apple TV+ contents.

See sounds amazing in Dolby Atmos though.

Apple TV+ on Roku definitely has issues. I get multiple load errors trying to start shows. Sometimes a full reboot fixes, sometimes it doesn’t. Had one show drop out while watching. Fire TV loads everything fine.

OP here. 🙂.
So I sprung for the ATV-4K. I got it from our local AT&T store for their 50% off price that was noised about online, but online they sold out. The local store said, no problem and sold it for $90. So, at that price it was a great upgrade. Now to get use to that remote. 😳. thanks everyone for input and suggestions. 👍

You can use your iPhone as the remote.
