Recently purchased a Apple TV and hooked it up using the HDMI port and it
works fine using it on a Yamaha A/V receiver that is in my bedroom. My main
sound system in the living room is a Marantz SR4001 which only has two HDMI
ports that are being used by the Blu-Ray player and cable box. Both units have
optical inputs, so I tried using the Apple TV using the optical cable on both the Marantz & the Yamaha and I am not getting any signal.

Anyone have any clues as to why?

Thanks:)

Set Options on both audio devices to Optical..Should work.

Make sure your using the correct optical signal on the receiver. I have to use the same video signal on my receiver but change the optical signal from 1 to 3 when using my Apple TV.

Re: Optical connection

Thanks for your input. Will try out your suggestions and let you know how it works.:)

splitter

Your answer is to spend ten dollars for an HDMI splitter that is powered and then connect the BluRay and the APPLETV to the same HDMI input...I have done this with sucess and send a long HDMI cable to the tv in the bedroom sharing one HDMI input.
Toslink cables are not reliable and often fail.

Re: Splitter

I will look into the splitter idea. The Toslink cable is still not working. The go to
Options suggestion is not working because I cannot find any options in the setup either on the Apple TV or the A/V receiver:(
