Apple has secured the rights to an upcoming "Tetris" film that will explore the elaborate story behind the iconic tile-matching video game, according to Deadline. Filming is expected to begin in early December in Scotland.

According to the report, the film will star British actor Taron Egerton as Henk Rogers, a Dutch video game designer who eventually secured the rights to "Tetris" and licensed the game to Nintendo for its original Game Boy. Egerton is best known for playing Elton John in "Rocketman" and Gary "Eggsy" Unwin in the "Kingsman" films.

The film, set to be released on Apple TV+, is being produced by Matthew Vaughn's Marv Films, which was also behind the "Rocketman" and "Kingsman" films. The cast is still being finalized for some roles, including Russian software engineer Alexey Pajitnov, who first created "Tetris" in 1984. A release date has yet to be targeted.

I would be interested in a film that also shows what makes and breaks its success, comparing Game Boy with handhelds in that time like for example the Watara Supervision.

There's actually a lot that happened behind the scenes with its creation and distribution. Check out the history of tetris by The Gaming Historian on YouTube. Plenty of material there for the possibility of a good movie.
I doubt the Gaming Historian will ever top that video. It's definitely something that needs more recognition.

Mission accomplished. :)

Tetris is one of my favorite games of all time. I was just thinking "I'd much rather see a documentary than a dramatization..."

A lot of the Apple TV+ shows apart eg from the Morning Show or Ted Lasso might also be high quality content. But in my personal opinion just often the wrong one to attract paying, streaming hungry people. Somehow the same like with Apple Arcade. The big blockbusters are missing.

I bumped into the Gaming Historian channel this year, great research and content indeed, he gives a unique feel to every gaming story, it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw this, the producers of this film should bring him onboard as a consultant or even storywriter...

There's also The Ecstacy of Order, which is about the first Classic Tetris World Championship.

Interesting, first shows on Apple TV+ that I am interested to watch. Which should still be within my free AppleTV+ subscription.

I can't imagine watching this at all.

Apple needs to learn that throwing big name stars into a show doesn't make it watchable. They need truly good content and they need a lot of it and they need it to include as many genres as possible. As it is now, once my TV+ free year subscription expires next April, I won’t be renewing it. Even during this year from hell I have watched very little TV+ content. On the other hand, thankfully Amazon Prime Video and Netflix and BritBox have a lot to offer and I watch their offerings almost daily. I just don’t believe TV+ can compete against them at the moment, or the other services like Disney+, nor will they be able to for a very long time, if ever...

Yes! Another very interesting sounding show! Apple keeping it going full steam ahead!

Looking forward to this. $pent many hour$ playing this at the local arcade as a teen.

Speaking of Nintendo, Console Wars was another fun documentary.

EDIT... Looks like someone put it on YT

Ahhhh just looking at that photo brings back memories! I'll watch if I remember and make time for it. The mini documentary 'High Score' on Netflix was also entertaining.

So much time and batteries spent playing Tetris on Gameboy as a kid. I think it was included with purchase? Playing it in extreme mode was a challenge. And by extreme mode I mean between passing streetlights in the back seat of my parent's car at night. Eventually I got that big honking magnifier light.

Amazing what people will make movies about! That said, i'll be intrigued to watch it :)
Netflix has a show about video games as well as historical iconic toys, I've watched and enjoyed both of them sure the topic is interesting if you played and enjoyed these things but nostalgia definitely plays a part. :D
