I have just purchased an apple tv 2 running software version 4.1.1 and i Just wondered if there is anyway that i could upgrade this to software version 5.2.0 so that I can jailbreak and also use the new features that are availabe on software version 5.

If you know how to do this i would be very grateful if you could give me some ideas how i do this. I have no problem doing the jailbreak part just want to know how to do the software upgrade of the apple tv 2.

Best place to learn this stuff is also at iClarified.

You need to donload an older version of ITunes, the newest version of ITunes doesnt alowe software downgrades.I recoment Itunes 10.6 or 10.7. Install Tip:Install ITunes. Go to the Start Button (lower Left Corner of your monitor) and search for iTunes Library.itl. Delete this Item. ITunes should now work normalley. If you dont do this,ITunes will prevent the software downgrade.

this link appears to be just for downgrading and not upgrading software versions.

When you use Seasonpass to do the jailbreak, it will create a custom .ipsw file for Apple TV software version 5.2, and then iTunes will restore your Apple TV using that custom .ipsw.

So I don't think you actually need to upgrade the Apple TV from 4.1.1 to 5.2 before jailbreaking. Just go through the jailbreak process and the end result will be a jailbroken Apple TV running 5.2. (In fact you don't actually want to use Apple TV's built-in update process because that will take it to the latest firmware which probably hasn't been jailbroken yet.)

Here is a thread with step-by-step instructions.
