Hello! So last year, in February I bought an Apple TV.

I am also an Apple Music student subscriber, which means I am entitled to free Apple TV+ for a limited time (undefined by Apple, but defined to 1 year on some - unverified - articles online). On MyUniDays it sounds like ATV+ is bundled with Apple Music student and you get ATV+ until you have Apple Music Student.

One year(ish) ago, I plugged in my ATV, signed in with everything and indeed it worked fine, I had access to Apple TV plus immediately without activating anything (if I remember correctly).

Then I sort of messed up with different users, bla bla, long story short I activated on my Apple Music student subscription my 1 year free ATV+ subscription which came from the Apple TV purchase...

Now if I manage my subscription I can see that my ATV+ free trial ends sometime in February 2021 and after that it renews for 4.99 a month. I can also cancel it now and lose access to ATV+ immediately (so it says). Fine. But I am not sure what that subscription is!

  • Is that my free 1 year trial that was bundled with the purchase of my ATV+, that expires 1 year after the purchase of the ATV?
  • What happens after that: do I still have ATV+ bundled with the Apple Music student or will that expire after 1 year of using it which will more or less coincide with 1 year from my ATV purchase?
  • Or is that February expiry the expiry of my 1 year Apple Music student bundled free ATV+?

I guess I can wait and see of course, but would like to be prepared. I could also cancel the trial now and see...

Any insights on this would be most appreciated thanks!

You only get 1 free subscription. Doesn't matter how many devices you bought. Doesn't matter whether you are or are not a student. If it says your subscription is due to end in February, it is indeed ending in February.

If you don't want to risk being charged a monthly fee, you will need to cancel it before the renewal date. It does stop access immediately when you cancel. You don't get the remaining time until it was due to renew.

Keep in mind that if your subscription was bundled with Apple Music, that too will likely get canceled as bundled services are tied together unless cancelled. You would need to start a subscription for each separately for them to be treated separately.

The free subscriptions for devices are tied to when you bought said devices... so the moment the device was activated, the clock on your subscription started. Check your Apple Music Subscription information... it should tell you when the service is due to bill you. If they have the same date, the two are tied together. Odds are pretty good they are.

I never knew, that as student i get with apple music also tv+, so i just checked, but cant use it, even tho unidays says it's in the sub... really weird.
