If I have an iPad, can I play a movie on it and use Apple TV to watch it on my big screen tv? Is this what is known as AirPlay?

Yes you can. As long as they are both on the same network and it's an iPad 2 onwards. One of my favourite features.

Super! How is the picture quality on a 52 inch tv?

Partly depends on the quality of the video file on your iPad (or video stream, if you're mirroring streams). Partly depends on your home network speeds.

I've had little problems, myself, but I've not placed too heavy a demand on the system, mostly for medium-quality video to start with.

Well mines a 32", but if the video quality is good, then it is good enough for my needs.
