Apple TV+ series "Severance" and "Black Bird" have been nominated for the 80th annual Golden Globe Awards, which will be presented on January 10, 2023. A few prominent cast members in each show have also received nominations.

Apple's streaming service landed six nominations in total:
  • Severance — Best Drama Series
  • Black Bird — Best Limited Series, Anthology Series, or Television Motion Picture
  • Adam Scott, Severance — Best Actor in Drama Series
  • John Turturro, Severance — Best Supporting Actor in Television Series
  • Taron Egerton, Black Bird — Best Actor in Limited Series, Anthology Series or Television Motion Picture
  • Paul Walter Hauser, Black Bird — Best Supporting Actor in Television Limited Series/Motion Picture
"Severance" is a sci-fi thriller created by Dan Erickson and executive produced by Ben Stiller. The series revolves around a mysterious company named Lumon Industries, whose employees cannot recall any memories about their personal lives while they are at work. Likewise, once the employees leave the office, they cannot remember anything about the workplace. The series has been renewed for a second season.

"Black Bird" is a limited drama series created by Dennis Lehane. When a policeman's son is sentenced to 10 years in a minimum-security prison, he is offered an opportunity for a commuted sentence with no conditions by authorities in exchange for entering a maximum-security prison and befriending a suspected serial killer to get him to confess.

Apple TV+ has been nominated for Golden Globe awards in the past, including for series "Ted Lasso" and "The Morning Show." In both 2021 and 2022, "Ted Lasso" star Jason Sudeikis won a Golden Globe award for Best Television Actor in a Musical or a Comedy.

For me, Black Bird was just ok. Feel it would have made a better movie than series.
Severance, on the other hand, was about as interesting a series as I have seen. For anyone who has ever spent any time working in a corporation, the story is pretty amazing. The cinematography is easily some of the best in '22. If you haven't seen either, I highly recommend Severance. Looking forward to s2.

I couldn’t get past the second episode of Severance. I still don’t get why Apple TV+ exists. The only reason I have it is because of the Apple one family bundle but I would never pay for it as a separate service.

I’d much rather Apple devote their resources to providing cheaper iCloud storage.
This is your point of view. For me, ATV+ chased Netflix into oblivion. Maybe there aren't many series, maybe some don't hold up - I'm looking at you Mythic Quest 3, but overall they are gems, and Severance or Servant are gems that are hard to find even on HBO Max.

Lol chased Netflix into oblivion 🙄

Couldn't get into Severance for some reason but loved Black Bird, Servant, and Defending Jacob.

Many excellent shows on ATV+. See, Slow Horses, For All Mankind, Invasion, Foundation, Defending Jacob, Amazing Stories, Surface, Ted Lasso, Tehran, not to mention the gorgeously re-mastered Peanuts shows. I am sure there are a bunch I am missing.

Severance was one of the things I wasn't able to get to while going through my ATV+ free trial. When I resub again, this is still on the "Up Next" list (assuming it doesn't get reset through being unsubbed too long). As a bonus, season 2 will be out by then as well! (if not more seasons)

For me, Severance is the best show I've watched since Breaking Bad. It would be HUGE right now if it weren't on Apple TV+. If it continues to be this good, I can see it really lifting Apple TV+ to the level of the big boys.

Those are all mediocre shows at best. Apple will never be successful in this space because they‘re limited in what type of content they will produce.

And these award shows are dinosaurs. They do not hold the prestige they once had, and they do no represent what people actually enjoy or want to watch. Just a corporate establishment patting their clowns on the back.

The Golden Globe Awards is mired in toxicity and controversies, where works by non-white (especially Asians) are frequently ignored, the members nominate subpar works without having seen them or through bribes, and its president Philip Berk assaulted and destroyed Brandan Fraser's career.

Re: Netflix, Netflix fans need to drop the charade of "prestige TV" and just watch hardcore BDSM porn all day. What they really want anyway. /shrug

Entertainment is subjective, but I loved both these series as well as Slow Horses, Mythic Quest, Ted Lasso, For all Mankind, Greyhound and Foundation. I have watched more on Apple TV+ than Netflix and Amazon combined in the last year. It is impressive what they created, I am not saying I agree with the strategy, but I think it is pretty good value for the cost.

Tell us. What shows do you consider not to be mediocre? And what do people actually enjoy or want to watch? Serious questions.

heh.. I'm the oddball there. ATV+ is the only thing I'd really use out of A1, so I'd get that a la carte. I may have been interested in AA as well, but I'd still be better off just getting both through Costco since they have annual subs for those there.
