Apple TV Sound Goes In and Out repeatedly

Hello, I have the 40GB Apple TV, hooked up via the Toslink cable. Sound is now going in and out like someone is randomly adjusting the volume. This is very distracting, and basically makes this unit unbearable.

Any similar results out there, and if so, any solutions you found?
