My parents don't have a computer, hence no iTunes, but their Asus N55U router has a USB storage functionality and an iTunes Server option.

If I plug in a USB drive with m4v format movies and turn on the iTunes Server function, will the ATV3 see it and stream the movies ok?

no, you would still need iTunes running

that router does support DLNA, which is supported by many smart TVs and blu-ray players.

on a quick search, here's a bluray player from target for $89 that supports DLNA
**do your homework though, i didn't really look at that.

with either the appleTV or DLNA, you would have to make sure the files are compatible with your player. Anything that plays on the aTV, should play on the others, with the exception of things purchased from the iTunes store.
