Apple TV's karaoke feature is about to get more immersive. Starting with the tvOS 17 update launching later this year, Apple Music Sing will support Continuity Camera, allowing users to see themselves on their TV via a wirelessly-connected iPhone camera.

Apple said users will be able to apply all-new camera filters as they sing along to the lyrics of their favorite songs to add to the experience.

Apple previously announced that FaceTime is launching on Apple TV with tvOS 17. This will also be enabled by Continuity Camera, allowing for people to use a wirelessly-connected iPhone or iPad camera to participate in a video call on their TV. FaceTime on tvOS requires a second-generation Apple TV 4K released in 2021 or newer.

The new Apple Music Sing feature was announced in a press release highlighting several services-related features coming to iOS 17, iPadOS 17, macOS Sonoma, watchOS 10, and tvOS 17. Other new features include recurring Apple Cash payments, and the ability for businesses to accept iPhone IDs for proof of age and identity later this year.

Didn’t know karaoke is still a thing ;)
I guess I spend too much time outside enjoying nature beauty around me…

Apple Music Sing would be great if it worked with the content I actually own, rather than requiring an additional subscription to re-rent music I (that as I said) already own...

Everyone focusing on trying to con me into renting music rather than making the purchasing/listening experiences better in general to get me to *buy* more? Great that they're able to con people into renting music they already own, I guess.. late stage capitalism/in********ation of everything, yada yada yada... but.. meh.

Keeping the shareholders happy I guess.

Also, git off my lawn!

With multiple camera-based uses for the AppleTV now, doesn’t it seem like they should just build a camera into it?
Not at all. In a lot of cases the Apple TV is in a cabinet, mounted behind a tv, or otherwise not where a camera would be useful. Not to mention that a camera capable of Center Stage would significantly add to the price of an Apple TV.
But that’s just my opinion

This must be coming soon, hopefully alongside this years iPhone. Or maybe the hardware isn’t ready yet, hence this feature and the nightstand mode for iPhone (HomePod with a screen is being worked on too apparently)

So any chance of being able to use one of our webcams for these tasks, as opposed to taking over our iPhones?

Using an iPhone as a mic would’ve made more sense for karaoke than a camera.

Without a microphone capability who really cares?

With ATV now having FaceTime and Karaoke video, it could really use:
1) a way to connect to a dedicated external camera. Using your iPhone camera via Continuity means you have to set it up each time, you can’t use your phone during, plus you have to think about battery level. You don’t want an internal camera built into the unit, you want to be able to place it wherever you want, including on top of the TV. The ATV unit should simply have a USB(c?) port so you can connect any webcam (are all peripherals going usbc?). Not 100% sure it would be able to support the nicety of Center Stage, but I think it could since people would be positioned pretty far away from the camera.
2) maybe a decent mic on the remote for karaoke, maybe for FaceTime (assuming the current mic isn’t decent). This might not be needed if an iPhone mic is good enough and can be used, but then you might have to pass the iPhone around to each singer which is a little weird.

Maybe Apple will have these in the next ATV iteration. Although, the better mic on the remote might make the remote bigger and drive up costs too much, so maybe Apple would just set up some kind of connection to third party wireless mics.
