Apple has added support for TBS and TNT to the Live Tune-In feature on the fourth-generation Apple TV in the United States.

Live Tune-In lets users jump directly into the live streams of select apps using the Siri Remote. Users can simply hold down the microphone button and say commands such as "Watch TBS" or "Watch TNT live." The feature requires tvOS 9.2 or later.

Live Tune-In also supports ABC News, CBS, CBS News, CNN Go, Cooking Channel, Disney Channel, Disney Jr, Disney XD, DIY, ESPN, Food Network, FXNOW, HGTV, and Travel Channel, plus live sporting events in the NHL app.

Meanwhile, Apple TV universal search now supports NRK TV and TV 2 Sumo in Norway and SVT Play in Sweden.

Universal search enables fourth-generation Apple TV users to conduct Siri voice searches or text-based searches to find TV and movie content across a wide range of channels. A wide number of apps are supported.

The app is useless, still can't believe they dedicated the home button on the remote to this junk

Just discovered this the other day when I introduced my three year old nephew to Star Wars and TNT has it available until January. For Christmas, I gave him a Chewbacca toy that does his damn Wookie noise. Seeing my nephew's reaction to Chewey on the TV for the first time was priceless. I know this has gone completely off topic, but sometimes people just need a smile amidst all of the hate around.

2 things, it can be changed back in the settings app that is if you have one or just complain to complain.
Also just because you think it is junk does not make it so. I love the new TV app very nice to have all the shows I'm watching show up in one spot across multiple apps.

U.S. only, which is expected. Fortunately, much, much more freeing Roku has FilmOn & "private" channels that lets me [a Canadian] "border-hop". I already get (CRTC) forbidden TBS & TNT. No, it's not in HD, but beggars can't be choosers. Never been into the closed ecosystem of Apple TV & doubt anything could bring me ther.

The only thing mine shows is HBO and iTunes store stuff. I think it's pretty crippled if it doesn't support Netflix and the Directv Now, NBC, CBS, ABC and Fox apps. Hopefully this will build over time.

I have Netflix stuff and Hulu as well as CBS stuff showing up in mine. Screenshot from my iPad but the same shows up on ATV.

What is the point of adding said cable channels to the Apple TV, when one can tune directly to the channel with the tv (and has to have the channel available with the cable provider)? What am I missing?

Better because Apple is involved?

Have to support Apple?

Embracing "the future of television"?

Using more of the wired broadband data tier you've paid for?

all ;)

More seriously: there's some utility here for multi-TV households where the owner doesn't want to lease a box for every TV. Hook up an :apple:TV to those TVs and you can watch some stuff without having a cable box.

Maybe the Apple TV is hooked up to a TV without a cable box. My provider charges $9 a month per box plus a service fee for having a DVR in the house. Could also be a show thats not on live TV they have available through there app.

What app? The first time you used the remapped home button there was a pop up on it and instructions on how to change it back. Did you just ignore that and went straight to complaining?

You ask what app he's talking about, but then proceed to understanding exactly what app he's talking about.... Being able to change the functionality back doesn't change the fact that the app is worthless and that Apple changed the default so that one of the few buttons takes you to a worthless screen. Reminds me of how the side button on Apple watch used to go to that worthless favorites screen.

but it only works if you have a supported tv service. I don't and it is completely empty.

In my area, unless you're a Cox customer, live streaming isn't available. CBS was heavily promoting the new AllAccess tier where you can enjoy live streaming of NFL games. So I subscribed to the $9.99 tier. No joy.

Has Turner improved their live streaming? I tried to watch NBA games on their live feed in their apps earlier this year and it was unwatchable.

Of if you don't want to have to switch between boxes and inputs on your TV. This way you can stay in the AppleTV with other apps, versus switching inputs, and going to your cable box.

More on-demand choices in a lot of cases. Also alleviates the need to pay monthly for a cable box in a room which is not often used (like a guest room).

I honestly thought he was taking about the TNT/TBS apps. I wanted to know what was worthless about them.

As for the button remap. That was NOT a surprise as they mentioned it during the last event. It has been reported on numerous times during the beta period. And for someone who is an active member on an Apple site. I find it hard to believe this was a surprise.

Apple even conveniently added a pop up to highlight the new feature AND how to change it.

TV app is just for content discovery and a watch list. It works with more than just pay tv authenticated apps. HBO Now, STARZ, Showtime, Hulu just to name a few, support the app.

You have none of those services.... remap the tv button and move on.

But Please recognize that the majority of the market subscribes to at least one streaming site that supports tvOS TV app.

Oh I never said it was a surprise. I knew it was coming and honestly I was expecting/hoping to get utility out of the corresponding TV app. However, I'm sure it did come as a surprise to many an Apple TV user, but as you mention they do explain the change.

Granted there is some percentage of Apple TV users that get utility from it, however it may not be as large a number as you might think. For 3 primary reasons...

1) With the cord cutting trend, I would hypothesize that a large percentage of Apple TV users don't subscribe to a cable/satellite service, so that would take away a large portion of functionality (because unless I'm completely missing something I don't see any way of having apps like ABC/NBC to show up without a subscription. The only thing that I've found that can even populate in there at all is the CW)

2) Netflix and Amazon Video are 2 of the largest services (I have both) and they aren't in the app

3) The services you mention like HBO, STARZ, Showtime, and Hulu perhaps are available, but I doubt a significant percentage of people subscribe to MULTIPLE of those services. And if you're only going to use one of them then you'd be better off in the individual app made for it.

Sure the obvious solution for me would be to remap the button, as you suggest, but I just had a lot of hope for the app.
