Apple TV's universal search feature now supports a selection of additional apps in the United States and other countries.

In the United States, fourth- and fifth-generation Apple TV users can now search for movies or TV shows on BBC America, Classix, and Oxygen, an NBC-owned channel that primarily airs true crime programming.

In Canada, newly supported apps include Apple Music, CBC TV, Classix, FXNOW Canada, ICI Tou.tv in Québec, and kids channel Treehouse.

In addition to the United States and Canada, Apple Music search functionality on tvOS is also now available in Australia, France, Germany, Japan, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, and the United Kingdom.

In Australia, other newly supported apps include 9Now, SBS, and Tenplay, while Viaplay was added in Norway and Sweden.

The universal search feature allows users to conduct Siri voice searches or text-based searches to find TV and movie content across a wide range of channels. A fourth-generation Apple TV or newer is required.

Wasn't there talk 2 years ago (shortly after the 4th gen TV launch) that universal search would open to third party apps as well?

Not sure how technically feasible it would be, but I'd love to have search extend to local apps like Computers and Plex.

The lack of a universal search was one of the reasons I gave up on the older Apple TV. Didn't know they put it in. Maybe I'll give it another chance.

Where are the services to sign into?

Exactly. So far the only english services seem to be Sportsnet, CBC and City. And of those, only Sportsnet needs to be authenticated to your cable package. No CTV, Global, or TSN. Pretty garbage.

Also annoying how I need to sign back in to Sportsnet and CNN every few weeks or so.

I suggest you tweet and Facebook comment @ CTV and Global about it. Tell them you watch all of City’s programs because they’re in the TV app. My Up Next list is full of City and CBC programming. I’d love to watch Global and CTV shows but because it’s not in the TV app, I rarely watch these channels.

I might be lazy but it’s too much work when you’re on the couch to go grab the iPad open the Global app, find and play your show on the iPad and AirPlay it. The CTV app doesn’t even have AirPlay and blocks screen mirroring. Their loss.
