Apple unlocked iPhone wants to update carrier settings upon connecting to Mac

I have an officially unlocked iPhone 3GS and every time i connect it to my Macs iTunes wants to update the carrier settings.

This would not be a problem but every time I update then i have to go to:

Settings > Network > Cellular Data Network > Cellular Data > APN

and type in internet, because the update erases this.

The workaround is to not update the carrier settings but it is getting tiresome because i connect my iPhone many times per day.
