Apple today updated its Mac Pro desktop tower with the all-new M2 Ultra chip, which features a 24-core CPU, up to a 76-core GPU, and support for up to 192GB of memory. Apple says the new Mac Pro is up to 3x faster than the fastest Intel-based Mac Pro.

The new Mac Pro has the same overall design as the previous Intel-based model. However, the tower is now equipped with eight Thunderbolt 4 ports instead of four, two higher-bandwidth HDMI ports that support up to an 8K display at 240Hz, seven PCIe expansion slots, dual 10 Gigabit Ethernet ports, and a headphone jack that supports impedance headphones. The computer can be configured with up to 8TB of SSD storage.

Like the new Mac Studio, and the latest MacBook Pro and Mac mini models, the Mac Pro now supports faster Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3.

The new Mac Pro is available to order starting today, and it will begin arriving to customers and launch in stores on Tuesday, June 13. In the U.S., pricing starts at $6,999, whereas the previous Intel-based Mac Pro started at $5,999. A rack-mounted version of the Mac Pro remains available from $7,499.

192GB max memory limit is incredibly small. Real workstations need terabytes of RAM. It's basically an overpriced Mac Studio with PCIe for IO, which can normally be done via Thunderbolt these days.

Really surprised Apple went with this kind of architecture. They needed a blowout product.

Lol @ everyone thinking Apple wouldn't want Studio and Mac Pro competing against eachother. The specs are basically identical, aside from drastically different pricing for PCIe (v4 no less). Makes the studio look like a BEAST in that package.

This just shows how bold Apple is...they dgaf.

I wasn't expecting that. Pretty much take the Mac Studio and add internal PCI Express Expansion, along with peripheral expansion upgrades. But the Ultra chip remains the same. I will have to see what upgrades there will be in the check out. It won't be very expensive because of no memory upgrades. So might work very well for what you get.

I wonder if the CPU module will be upgradeable in the future or are you locked into the M2 Ultra
If not upgradeable I see no reason to purchase this new Mac Pro

The Studio price compared to the Pro price makes no sense. They use the same exact chip with non-upgradable RAM.

Totally the same, excepting the different logic board, the different chassis, the different PSU, the different I/O...

Who is this for?

Anyone who needs PCIe slots for things other than GPUs...

The M2 Mac Pro should start at 64GB of RAM (compared to 32GB for the Intel model) and a 1TB SSD (compared to 256GB for the Intel model). That is the $1000 price difference right there ($600 for SSD and $400 for RAM at Apple's BTO prices).

The new Mac Pro is almost a scam if you compare its specs with those of the new Mac Studio. Unupgradeable RAM + PCI support don't justify the price difference.
It feels like highway robbery. But I bet Apple look at this like a corporate price for corporate customers. No prosumer is going to buy this.
