Following the launch of Apple Music, Apple today updated GarageBand for Mac to version 10.1, adding new features and a huge amount of new content for musicians and sound makers to work with. The update to GarageBand was first announced in mid-June.

The update brings 10 new Drummers with beats appropriate for electronic music and Hip Hop styles like House, Trap, Techno, and Dubstep, plus it adds more than 100 EDM and Hip Hop-inspired synth sounds, each of which includes Transform Pad Smart Control for tweaking sounds to each user's personal taste. There are also 1,000 new Apple Loops made from a wide variety of instruments.

Today's update brings support for the Force Touch trackpad when GarageBand is used with the MacBook or new MacBook Pros, and it includes a new feature that lets music be shared directly to Apple Music Connect, Apple's new social networking platform aimed at artists.
-10 new Drummers that produce beats in a variety of electronic music and Hip Hop styles including House, Trap, Techno, Dubstep and more
- Over 100 EDM and Hip Hop-inspired synthesizer Patches featuring the new Transform Pad Smart Control for sound morphing
- Record the movements of software instrument Smart Controls to capture performances of effect and tone adjustments
- 1,000 new Apple Loops from a variety of popular instruments and genres including EDM, Hip Hop, Indie, Disco, Funk, and Blues
- Share directly from GarageBand to Apple Music Connect
- Adds support for Force Touch trackpad
- Resolves an issue which prevented the export of long recordings
- Contains multiple enhancements to Accessibility
Apple has also released a minor update for its GarageBand app for iOS, introducing bug fixes and the ability to share music directly from the app to Apple Music Connect.

GarageBand for Mac can be downloaded from the Mac App Store for $4.99. [Direct Link]

Why would the ability to upload to Connect be added to GarageBand? That really seems like something that should be reserved for Logic Pro X.

Adding the ability to upload from GarageBand is like adding the ability to upload to the AppStore from Script Editor or Automater. Yeah, a pro could be using it, but it's more likely the pro is using something else (pro here meaning someone who is good enough that they should distribute what they're doing and be paid for it.)

I WANT PODCASTING!!!!

(I feel better after yelling)
I'm pretty sure that GarageBand 6.0.5 has the podcasting features you're looking for. By the way, it's still on your Mac, unless you deleted it. It's not deleted by upgrading to the newer version. It should be in your Applications folder, possibly in a folder titled "GarageBand 6.0.5".

I would be happy if the update would just install. Fails on App Store updates tells me to go to purchases, fails there too. What the hell

Is Garageband not free anymore?

edit- Or rather, when did it become paid? I have it on my iphone and macbook pro and don't recall ever paying for it.

Getting eerily close to Logic territory. Will be interesting to see what happens in a couple of years.

I remember following some of my favorite bands, and I believe it was 30 Seconds to Mars, but he was editing some demo stuff on his MBP, and was using GarageBand, I thought that was pretty hilarious.

The iWork, iOS iPhoto, and GB apps were paid apps until about WWDC 2013. I paid only for iPhoto on iOS. None of the apps were free for Mac or iOS users when I bought my iPhone 5 or mid-2012 rMBP (the latter in early 2013), but when I bought my iPad Air and late-2013 rMBP (both in late-2013), both sets of apps had been made "free" with the purchase of new Apple devices.

The earlier OS X versions of iWork and iLife were included with a new iMac, but were paid apps for the Mac Pro and rMBP I owned at the time. I still have those DVDs, I think they're iWork/iLife 2011 - I bought them - and the 2009/2011 apps were "upgraded" to the new versions at no cost. I still use the older version of GB, just for Magic Garageband!

10 new drummers, none of which can into jazz.

Yes, I noticed that. Also no progressive rock drummers; the theme here seems to be "the drummer personalities are proficient but don't actually play at that level".

Having a percussionist that uses the Orchestral Kit would also be nice.

Don't forget, you can use Apple's iOS "Logic Remote" app to control GarageBand, and Mainstage 3. Logic Remote is free, and wicked cool.

Logic already had all the drummers but it looks like not these new synths yet. Logic update soon for those (and hopefully more updates and fixes)? It's weird to have instruments in GB that aren't in Logic yet.

It's not, looks like five bucks. Might come free with a new mac though.

All iLife and iWork programs come free with a new Mac. Same with iOS versions when you buy a new idevice.

Sometimes you have to go into the Purchases tab to re download GarageBand for some reason.

One thing that I just found out is that you can now have more than one drummer playing in a song. The first time I tried playing it back, though, I got an error message (but not after that).

GarageBand is the easiest way to create a great-sounding song on your Mac.Add realistic, impeccably produced and performed drum grooves to your song with Drummer.
