Apple has updated its iMovie consumer video editing software with support for additional, older Macs.

Previously, iMovie didn't work on Macs that did not have an OpenCL-capable graphics card, including some configurations of the Mid/Late 2007 MacBook Pro, Mid 2007 and Early 2008 iMacs, and the Early 2008 Mac Pro.

Now any Mac that works with OS X Mavericks can use iMovie.
iMovie (2013): About video card compatibility

Installing iMovie (2013) previously required a computer with an OpenCL-capable video card. This requirement was removed, and you can install iMovie version 10.0.1 on any Mac with OS X Mavericks.
iMovie is a $14.99 download from the Mac App Store, though purchasers of new Macs receive the app for free. [Direct Link]

Finally!

And not because I couldn't upgrade, but because I had upgraded... I got zero warnings that the new iMovie was incompatible with my iMac. None at all. It updated just fine.

It ran fine. Kind of flaky, crashed fairly often when just mucking about. Then I tried to import video. I could import a VERY short video just fine, but anything longer than about 15 seconds would crash iMovie. Every time. Only in researching it did I find out that it wasn't even supposed to install on my machine!

Hopefully it runs without crashing all the time now!

I was about to ask if this actually affected anyone.. I guess so. :)

Sweet move Apple!

I would love to see Apple offer more legacy support.

Both support for older hardware and making it so that the older software runs on the newer operating systems. Sandbox it or envelope it as necessary but frankly everything ever produced for Macs, and even Apples and the Lisa, should run on the modern MacOSX AND on the iOS.

The power is there to emulate and to cross compile.

Some more support would be nice but I think you're a bit unrealistic in supporting that old hardware/software (Lisa)… It would just become more tiresome for the developers to offer support for that 0,001 percent of the people that would use it.

iMovie Version 10 is simply unusable... even on newer Macs

... I very much convinced that Apple should never have released iMovie Version 10.

The given functional scope is very, very, very poor and it is impossible to work with larger libraries. i.e. my library covers 5 years of video material split into 300 events nicely sorted by date in Version 9, whereas Version 10 offers my only an alphabetic list without any indication of date/time stamp!!!!

All the shame goes to the apple release manager, who seem *NEVER* to have really worked with more than 10 events! It was also no-where mentioned, that "sorting by date" was rereleased!

Since I couldn't find any workaround in Version 10, I've back-migrated to Version 9 (... and deleted the newly created Version 10 video library by hand to prevent from doubling all video material!!!!)

I hope that many more people complain about Version 10, so that Apple will start fixing the Version 10 and to bring it function wise to at least par with Version 9!

Therefore "OpenCL-capable graphics card support" is really not priority number 1!

Once again I don't get credit for the tips I submit. I submitted this earlier.

We always appreciate email tips, but keep in mind that we also continually watch for news stories and app updates to share with you guys. In this instance, we were aware of the update before we received emails about it.

Keep sending in tips though! We always try to give credit where credit is due.

Okay. /MacRumors

But seriously, you probably aren't the only one to submit these tips you mention, and there is no way of knowing whether you were even first to do so.

I submit tips sometimes, but I really don't think my tips are usually attribution worthy. I put that more towards [the App developer].

How about final cut with no open cl support. And mavericks for all intel macs to boot.

Oh, didn't expect an actual reply. Always appreciative of you guys paying attention to our grievances and/or otherwise semi-serious banter. :D

Thanks for clearing that up. :)

Rosetta required zero customer support. Only the appropriate frameworks and a compatible kernel.

So you support the tyranny by the majority. If the majority don't use a feature then cut it out... No, that is not a good solution.

Besides, Apple does a lot of things "Because They Can" and "To Be Different".

You're probably too young to have any legacy data or apps but when you grow up you'll want to be able to access your old data and programs. Guaranteed.

Isn't it at all possible that the App Store told them that there was an update?

No because I told them about it long before the article was posted. And such a short article takes less than a minute to produce. No big deal though, until next time lol. :)

Uuugh don't go there. If you want to feel old and special, be my guest. I never said that supporting older hardware/software is a bad thing. YES I would like Apple to support OS X 10.6 on current hardware (for 32-bit apps). Just stated that he went too far. Rosetta was and is a good thing. Apple however likes to get the entire eco-system clean. They are going to 64-bit only, they have rewritten the iWork suite etc. and want to make it easier for developers/users (and not in the MS kinda style).

No I don't like that iWork/iLife lost features but supporting Lisa is a bit too much for my taste.

Next restored feature should be...

Chapter Markers! Anyone else with me on them adding Chapter Markers back to iMovie 10?

how do you downgrade to imovei 9?

also can u still separate audio from the video in the older version?

I'm all grown up. There's no old program or data that I have a soft spot for. I want a relatively clean, relatively unburdened OS that takes advantage of modern chipsets and architecture and anything I would have needed from a decade ago has been updated and upgraded.

And everyone who says it takes zero developer or customer overhead to maintain backwards compatibility probably isn't a developer. It can definitely be done, but every time you want to progress, you've got to expend more and more resources on keeping a smaller and smaller percentage of your base happy. It is not zero, or even small, overhead.

If people are obsessed with running old stuff, the best solution is for some enterprising person to write the appropriate emulator/virtual machine and sell it as a niche product. Easier said than done obviously, but it's also easier said than done to support everything a hardware/software company has ever done.

To relate it back to pig farming (love your site, wish I lived in Vermont), I'd love to go into my local Whole Foods and get skin-on pork belly. Can't do it. I can get belly, but no skin to be found because it is only a small consumer base that would even consider buying it her in the US. So producers don't tend to do it, even though they can. I mean, what does it cost to leave skin on? I have to find a niche producer to get it, and even that is hard. :)

Lol, I was seriously thinking they were talking about Snow Leopard support? Why mistreat such an old non Open CL capable Mac with Mavericks anyway? Lift the hardware requirement on the App, but the computer still struggles with the OS. Nice!
