here they are saying that there are two different itunes 9.1.1 a 11 and 12. apparently the 12 doesn't have problems with back up.

o and if it loads weird just hit the translate button again to fix it.

My iTunes is 9.1.1.12 and no I did not download it from the web. I updated ordinarily within itunes itself.

the .12 release was a stealth update to fix a bug with the "convert to 128kbps" option for iphone/ipod touch.

it is not presented via software update if you already have .11 installed.
you need to manually download and install if you want .12.

if you didn't already have .11 installed then .12 is presented via software update.

it has nothing to do with iphone backups not working.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 4_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/532.9 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0.5 Mobile/8A274b Safari/6531.22.7)

The 4.0 backups have nothing to do with your iTunes version. As long as you have the SDK installed it'll backup. So that means no backing up for Windows.
