Apple today announced that it has updated its professional music-making app Logic Pro with several new features on the Mac and iPad.

Logic-Pro-Amplifies-Beat-Making-Feature.jpg

First, a new Flashback Capture feature lets you recover a performance that otherwise may have been lost because you forgot to set Logic Pro to record.

Next, there are enhancements to the Stem Splitter feature that allows you to extract stems from an audio track for vocals, bass, drums, and other instrumental parts. With today's update, Apple says Stem Splitter now supports guitar and piano, and the feature now offers even greater audio fidelity. Stem Splitter requires a Mac with an M1 chip or newer, or an iPad with an A12 Bionic chip or newer running iPadOS 18.4 or later.

The new version of Logic Pro also includes a new Dancefloor Rush sound pack for the Mac and iPad, offering drum-and-bass sounds with over 400 dynamic loops and punchy drum kits. Two more sound packs added to the Mac app include Magnetic Imperfections with analog tape sounds, and Tosin Abasi with progressive metal guitar sounds.

On the Mac, Logic Pro's built-in notepad now supports Apple Intelligence's Writing Tools.

Logic Pro version 11.2 for Mac and version 2.2 for iPad are available now in the App Store, as free updates for existing users. In the U.S., Logic Pro costs $199.99 on the Mac for new users, and $4.99 per month or $49 per year on the iPad.

For a list of all new features and changes introduced today, read Apple's full release notes for the latest versions of the Mac app and iPad app.

A copy/paste article from someone who appears to have little or zero understanding of this incredible, powerful, audio creation and processing application. Of course, it is unlikely to be unveiled as such on many users’ iPads, but calling it a “beat maker” is an insult.

This is a fully capable digital audio workstation, and it is magnificent.

I love that everyone is dunking on the “professional beat maker” description. Notator Logic came out in 1993, and the codebase is responsible for more than anyone might realize.

I hope the next major release brings the iPadOS UI scheme to the Mac.

I think the "beat-making app" jargon comes from the press release, which refers to it that way, and was just a lazy continuation of that description. It is, however, a description I wouldn't mind never hearing again. I use Logic almost every day and never think of it as a "beat-making app." As for the Notator Logic reference, it's interesting, but Logic is ever so slightly different than it was 30 years ago, so I don't think it matters if it started as something that made beats. (If that's the point you're making; I started Logic with version 7 and don't know very well what it was like before that.)

Bro don't be so serious, the author was just trying to report the news asap 🤷‍♂️

Thought it was weird they updated a whole version number for this, then I read the actual patch notes. Jesus.

search functionality for tracks was sorely needed, undo history saved per project is huge, and continuous takes is probably something so clever other DAWs will copy it.

Hitting record then jumping to a physical instrument across the studio is a massive pain in the ass, if it even halfway works like the description suggests I will be elated.

A bunch of dolby renderer things tweaked too including studio display output as well as probably a hundred bug fixes, really glad Apple is still taking care of the Logic team. What a great update.

Amen, brother.

Enjoy your "beat-making." And I second the motion on the Flashback feature.

Logic Pro 7 was my first version too. (I think I ordered Logic Pro 6, and Apple was in some phase where they were unannouncedly sending a free "upgrade" to version 7 which took the form of just sending people version 7. The user was responsible for upgrading from Jaguar to Panther, though, which I suppose Apple guessed most users of Logic Pro would do anyway.)

My first version since Apple acquired it, that is. I think my very first version was Logic… 4, when it was still owned by Emagic? I can say that the evolution from Emagic Logic 4 and Apple's Logic Pro 7 wasn't foundationally dramatic.

Beat-making app? That is selling the Logic’s capabilities juuuust a little short. Do you mean “Digital audio workstation”?

Seriously. ^ ^

I mean, I suppose it is. But that feels rather like calling Final Cut Pro a "professional cross-dissolve app."

Uh…lol… Logic Pro is a “beat-making” app now ? It’s a DAW ( Digital Audio Workstation )
I really didn't mean to strike a nerve here…

I wrote music-making app in my original draft, and I overthought it and changed it to beats-making based on the wording of Apple's press release.

Reverted it to music-making for you all.

No beatmaking app at all. Before Apple buying Logic, it was one of the top DAW’s, competing with ProTools, Cubase and others.

Several big name producers used and still use Logic.

My brother plays piano and synths and, at some point in the 90’s, was considering setting up a home studio. Logic was way too expensive for him.

I jumped to Logic during the covid discount. Wasn't sure it would be that much of an improvement over GarageBand, but it's been the best software purchase of my life.

btw, I think Flashback Capture has been an unannounced feature for awhile. I remember seeing a SEIDS video about it several months ago.

The acknowledgement is appreciated. ^ ^

I gathered the article's wording came from the press release's wording once I found the press release. (Some people seemed to take it more personally – I think that was slight overreaction.)

Seriously. The single purchase has been serving me since 2013 with major free upgrades along the way.

It sure seems easy to criticize Apple these days, and just as easy to forget they continue to support absolutely incomparable stuff like this with barely a glitch.

Apple should create a new mode besides basic and advanced. Call it 'Beat maker mode'. This way it will strip out all the unnecessary other stuff so you can make beats without other annoying genres
Just use the quick sampler and feed it whichever .wav you got. Lots of time stretching, pitching and of course slicing modes available. Btw, fully compatible with Novation’s Launchpad and Launchkey

Seriously, indeed! It's been an astonishing value. All the more surprising that the iPad version is subscription. My second(?) year is almost up and I'm considering not re-upping as I don't use it that much on my iPad.

What a very weak update … I was hoping to have some more plugs, fully functional sampler and alchemy on iPad, the plug in tiles on iPad to be available on Mac too (like in Ableton so handy) … oh well it’s still very powerful …

I really didn't mean to strike a chord here…

You mean "strike a nerve". To "strike a chord" would be a very different response.
