Apple today increased the trade-in values for some Macs, with the update coming alongside the launch of new 13-inch and 15-inch M3 MacBook Air models.

Mac users who opt to trade in an old machine can get between $120 and $1315, with the values increased from the prior $115 to $1070 range. Most of the trade-in values have seen only minor increases or have stayed the same, but the Mac Studio has driven values up.

Apple is now offering up to $1315 when trading in a Mac Studio, with the prior maximum at $1070.
  • MacBook Pro - Up to $1000 (Up from $990)
  • MacBook Air - Up to $550 (No change)
  • MacBook - Up to $160 (Up from $150)
  • iMac - Up to $440 (No change)
  • iMac Pro - Up to $500 (No change)
  • Mac mini - Up to $400 (Down from $410)
  • Mac Studio - Up to $1315 (Up from $1070)
  • Mac Pro - Up to $800 (Down from $900)
Trade-in values vary based on the condition, year, and configuration of the Mac that's being traded in. Macs can be traded in toward the purchase of a new device or the value can be added toward an Apple Gift Card.

Values for trading in other devices like the iPhone and Apple Watch have not changed.

I regret doing a trade-in of a couple machines a couple years ago (vs selling them)

I thought I'd buy a new Mac, but unfortunately the Apple direct pricing is always more than all the third parties and never very attractive and thus I've bought nothing..

As a result, I've been "working off the gift cards" via iCloud monthly fees deductions.
Suffice to say I'm good on iCloud credits for another couple years

Maybe an iPad Mini refresh will save me and I can cash out?
Fingers crossed!

private sales (and/or eBay and the likes) will usually give you better $$, but Apple has the convenience factor going for it ...

For those complaining about the low trade in prices: Apple still needs to make money of of your pawn trade. They have to refurbish, repackage and restore it, and it will sit on the shelf for quite some time. They have to pay their bills people.

Does anyone know the value of a base M1 Air? My wife has expressed an interest in upgrading, and I might surprise her if the price is right.

That's probably because they are now taking on new models they weren't previously right?

IE yesterday couldn't trade an M2 13/ 15 inch Air. Today, you can. And that will hold max value from its predecessor (if it had one in case of 15 Air, but the generation of laptops from 2022 timeframe I mean..)

The way they don't seem to account for RAM upgrades in particular -- is REALLY frustrating.

They overcharge for that on the front end and then act like it doesn't exist on the trade-in side.
Because they know its real worth… if its worth next to nothing to them on the sell, its worth even less after its used.

But people will buy those upgrades… it kind of subsidizes the base model in some ways. When they average out the sales that every 5th 10th or so customers bumps up their unit sales revenue.

I just don't know how they can basically not account for it at all on trade ins.

When they go to sell them as Refurbs, they certainly are charging more for more RAM...but they didn't pay anymore for that RAM to the person who traded it in.

It's like -- how many times and people can they overcharge for the same RAM sticks!?
It's really just ... crummy

Yeah.. but if people willingly trade in, and then buy….

The only advantage of a trade in is there is no risk of getting completely scammed out of its whole value if you privately sell it, and it goes wrong :/

$555 for my M1 MacBook Pro (8C GPU, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD),... nah, I'm good.
£880 for M1 MacBook Pro 16gb 1TB SSD 16C GPU, not sure whether to get a gift card or can I be bothered with eBay for another £100-£150.

I’ll put it towards the Mac Studio if the M3 version is announced soon, given up with MacBook eye strain.

Trade-ins are convenient, but you can almost always get more if you sell it yourself. Main thing you’re putting in at that point is the time it takes to find a buyer. Could be days. Could be months.

Wow - a $50k Mac Pro is valued at most at $800 by Apple. I wonder if this is indicative of OS support for all Intel based Macs is coming to an end soon - possibly with the next version of MacOS.
I think that it's more indicative of the markup on the original sale of the Mac Pro.

I have the base M1 MBA, thinking about upgrading to M3 Air, and plugged it into the site- $445. That comes to $654 ($554 for me as I'm a teacher and get an educator discount) . It's quite tempting.

The posted values on the Apple trade-in site have always been much lower than what I actually got from them. The posted value for a MacBook Air is $550, mine is actually able to get $945 on that site.

Don't know why they're making themselves look worse than they are.

I just ran the numbers on my base 13” 8 8 256 air on Apple military site.
Cost of new base 13” M3 $989.
Trade in on M2 base air $670.
$319 difference.
Might be worth the upgrade.

I bought an open box condition base model MacBook Air M1 for $200 locally on Facebook Marketplace. It only had one charge cycle. No scratches, dings, or dents. I connected an external SSD to it and shared the drive out via my home WiFi to act as a media server in my house. One of the best deals I’ve ever found on Facebook.
