I’ve shared this idea in a few comment threads but wanted to give it a dedicated post here to see what others think. It is my first time posting on this website and I’m hoping this is the right forum as I can’t just post this under Apple Wearables which is what this would be.

There has been a lot of talk online about an Apple Vision Air, here is my take on this.

I believe an Apple Vision Air headset is likely if Apple:
  • Develops an R2 chip that can fit in iPhone Pro Max (a follow-up to the R1 used in Vision Pro).
  • Adds a Thunderbolt port to the iPhone Pro Max for high-speed, low-latency connection.
  • Switches to a silicon-carbon battery, improving battery capacity without increasing size.

According to a realistic estimate from ChatGPT, a silicon-carbon battery of the same size as the one in the iPhone 17 Pro Max could reach ≈6,360 mAh which is about 25% more capacity than the current battery in iPhone 17 Pro Max.

That’s roughly double the energy in the Vision Pro’s 3,166 mAh battery pack, giving enough power to run both the Vision Air headset and the Pro Max itself on the go.

Extra MagSafe battery packs could extend runtime even further.

How It Could Work
  • Apple Vision could be an exclusive app for iPhone Pro Max models.
  • You’d simply connect the Vision Air headset via Thunderbolt, open the app, and power on.
  • The iPhone Pro Max would handle all the compute and power delivery.
This setup would encourage more users to choose the Pro Max, boosting hardware sales while keeping the headset light and portable.

Imagine this, you hike to a scenic spot on a great day with perfect weather.

You sit down, pull out your Vision Air, plug it into your iPhone Pro Max, and capture Spatial Photos and Videos using the Pro Max cameras, what you see in the headset is exactly what the cameras see.

This could make the iPhone Pro Max + Vision Air combo the most immersive and high-quality spatial capture system available. While also providing a lower cost headset to view spatial content in which is Vision Air.

Also you could just leave your Pro Max on a MagSafe nightstand charger and sit on your sofa with Vision Air on and watch as many movies as you want without worrying about battery life because it’s powered off the Pro Max.

What do you think?

Could Apple realistically design something like this, or would power and thermal limits make it impractical?

Could we see a higher priced iPhone Pro Max with an Apple R2 chip inside to power a lower priced Apple Vision headset due to the cost of the chips being moved over to the iPhone Pro Max?

(Disclosure: Yes, I used ChatGPT to help me write this. But I originally wrote an entire post, had it process that, and even tweaked this a bit so this could all be more digestible.)

Milliampere-hour isn't a measure of energy. Only Whr is. That's why nobody (who wants to be treated seriously) uses mAh to talk about batteries.

Ask GPT about Whr. You'll discover even an SiC battery on the Pro Max holds a lot less energy than the current VP external pack.

Thanks for explaining this. I didn’t know that.

The upside of this not being possible is you won’t have people sitting on their sofa all day being couch potatoes in Vision Air. Because that is likely what would happen.
