Apple today announced the Apple Vision Pro, a wearable augmented and virtual reality headset. Because of the way the headset fits against the face, it does not accommodate glasses, but Apple has a solution for those who need prescription lenses.

Apple is partnering with Zeiss to offer Zeiss Optical Inserts that can be customized to each person's vision prescription. The inserts will attach to the Vision Pro lenses magnetically, allowing for precise viewing and eye tracking.

There is no word yet on what the Zeiss prescription inserts will cost, but Apple says that vision correction accessories will be sold separately.

Glasses wearers will need a valid prescription to get the inserts, and not all prescriptions will be supported, so there will be some limitations that might prevent some people from using the headset.

The Vision Pro headset will be available in early 2024 and it will be priced starting at $3,499.

$999/pair

I was surprised when they announced this. It makes a lot of sense, and I'm glad they have them available. And given the price of the VP, I would hope you get a complementary pair. But I'm not holding my breath on that.

This is how most VR and AR headsets are, so not unexpected. In fact there are several sites that produce custom prescriptions for most existing headsets. I would imagine they will start producing their own inserts for vision pro as well.

I have poor distance vision 20/800 and have started to need a progressive lens as I get older. I hope I will be able to even use this. Hopefully they will publish the maximum correction specifications so I can go to my optometrist and see if the headset is even an option for me.

I do wonder how easy it will be to remove for other people, when I had the first iPad and took it to my work's aircraft simulator training, people there were constantly grabbing it to try out as they had never seen one before, just saw a newspaper article or story on the news about them.

Hopefully one day, Apple Vision will be nearly as small as regular eyeglasses.
The battery life is only 2 hours, which is not that good. In actual usage we will most likely get less than that.

The battery is connected separately, which makes it lighter on the head but it is also cumbersome and awkward.

All of this will need to be improved. So if I get this at all I will wait for 2nd or 3rd gen.

I suspect that as a 52yr old guy, this won't be used by me because prebyopia on top of my myopia.

Oh, and the price, yeah, that price.
Perhaps they will have a progressive lens. Note that lots of Apple execs are in their late 40s or 50s and have presbyopia.
