Having delved deep in to the Apple website small print, it appears that that EE don’t support the Apple Watch on 3G. They’ve stated that it will work on 4G only. This could be potentially a huge issue to many prospective Apple Watch 3 owners as it renders it almost useless without the iPhone - and works the same as the previous iPhone dependant variants.

Yeah I saw that too it’s LTE only and not suppporting UMTS (3G) on EE.

I don’t know if this is a limitation of the EE network or something that relates to the UK bands we use for 3G.

By that I mean when other networks support the watch, will they also be limited to 4G.

Pretty sure I read somewhere that EE was compatible on one of the 3G bands.

We are getting 6 months free unlimited data with EE, we can decide in that time if it's functional or not :)

But most purchases hinge on this feature. If it doesn’t work that well, it’s money down the drain.

Yes this is EE limitation for AW3 connections. EE does actually support UMTS 2100(3G). AW3 clearly supports UMTS 2100(3G) as it is listed. So EE has made a choice (they have their reasons) not to connect AW3 to 3G

EE support these

  • 800MHz(band 26) for 4G
  • 1800MHz(band 3) for 2G and 4G
  • 2100MHz(band 1) for 3G only
  • 2600MHz(band 7) for 4G
Other networks may support AW3 on 3G when they get onboard
