Apple Watch 7 won’t unlock Mac

My new Apple Watch 7 won’t unlock my iMac as my previous 6 series would do. The watch doesn’t show up in the Security section of the Preferences: only the 6 is there (along with a previous watch). Any suggestions of what could be wrong?

First thing to try is restart the mac and the watch (hold both buttons down until the Apple logo appears).

Make sure the Watch is signed in to iCloud.
