hi please could someone answer this question , when I turn the apple watch on ,do I need to tap the apple watch app on iPhone 6 or is this app just running in background all the time ?

Uh, you only use that app to change settings or add apps/music to your Watch. You don't need to worry about the app at all and, no, it doesn't run in the background.
