This is my first “lament” for any Apple product I’ve ever owned. My Apple Watch was purchased 20 months ago, at just over $500. Today the battery sometimes fails within an hour of removing it from the charger, and typically will only last about eight hours during the day. The Battery app shows 86%. An Apple Store Genius ran diagnostics (no issues), then a total reinstall of the OS. I went to the Apple Store with the intention of having the battery replaced ($79 on Apple’s support site), but Apple won’t replace the battery (even though I’m paying!) unless the battery is below 80%. So, the watch goes into the dresser drawer until the battery reaches 79%.

Here's the obligatory I've had Apple Watches since the 2 - bought the SS every two years until the Ultra this go around. Never had that experience. Batteries have been great - didn't wear them for sleep - that's when they charged.

With that out of the way - your experience sucks. Can't believe they won't change the battery out.

My wife had a similar experience with her Series 3 a number of years ago. The battery would die well before the end of the day. Took the watch to the Apple Store and they claimed the battery was fine. At that time, we didn't have access to see the battery health, so I'm assuming it was over 80%. We did everything possible, unpaired and then repaired the watch, turned off background app refresh, etc.. Nothing helped.

After some time, Apple finally replaced the battery, well actually the watch, with a refurbished Series 3. My guess would have been that when they checked the battery that time, it was below 80%.

I do wish Apple would allow customers to do the battery service, especially if they're willing to pay.

Edited to add: The watch was nearly two years old when this started to happen.

Don’t understand why they will not change the battery if you are willing to cover the cost.

That’s odd that Apple wouldn’t change the battery. I had mine changed on my 12 Pro and the battery health was higher than 80%. I paid for the battery change. Ended up with a new phone as they scratched the heck out of my phone.

IF you use the watch a lot, anything other than ultra has to be fully charged once per day, and sometimes twice if you don't have one of the newer series. You can improve this with the AOD on display and no cellular connection.
