Hi everybody,

since yesterday, my Apple Watch Series 4 suddenly doesn't connect to my iPhone anymore – to be more precise: It only still does so if the Apple Watch is extremely near to my iPhone, a few centimetres at most. This is through bluetooth, I guess, because if I click on "Settings – WiFi" on my Apple Watch, it doesn't show any networks at all anymore (WiFi is toggled on, of course). I resetted my network settings, unpaired the Apple Watch, resetted it and set it up again several times (from my backup and as a new watch) – always the same. Even the setup itself (to at least get to the point when the watch is set up) only works if Apple Watch and iPhone are extremely near to each other, otherwise the iPhone unpairs the watch automatically at some point of the process without warning and brings me back to the initial pairing page again. The graphic at the beginning isn't recognised by my iPhone camera, I can only use the manual setup with the code. There suddenly seems to be a severe connection problem between the two devices, and at this point, I have to assume that this isn't a software bug, but somehow only a weak bluetooth signal is all that left and that the wifi antenna of the Apple Watch isn't working anymore because of a hardware defect (plus the severe malfunction of the bluetooth, too). I was surprised, though, that I found no other case like mine when googling the problem.

Before I am visiting the Genius Bar with this (hoping that they will cover a hardware defect under German law – the watch is more than one year old, but less than two and was bought directly from Apple) – if anybody here has another hint which leads to a software problem, I would be grateful if you could let me know. I don't know, though, how I can reset my Apple Watch even more than I did when resetting it several times ... And again, as the Apple Watch doesn't even see any WiFi networks anymore, the problem definitely seems to be on the Watch side.

Thanks in advance!

You've probably done all this:
  • make sure your software is up-to-date on both devices
  • make sure the same apple ids are being used on both devices.
  • clean your watch with a microfiber towel
  • manually expel water from the watch
  • Check your memory. did you load a bunch of music max-ing it out?
  • Delete any apps you're not using.
  • I did see you tried resetting.

It sound like you have a handle on things, so it's likely a hardware issue.

Thanks a lot for your reply – yes, I considered all of these and the software is up to date, but thanks anyway for the hints. Really seems like I have a WiFi (and maybe also Bluetooth) hardware antenna issue although I didn't find any similar case with googling. Will go to the Genius Bar on Monday, hoping and praying for a replacement ...

Hi lars666,

I was wondering if you found a solution?

My Apple Watch 4 haves the same problems.

kind regards .

Is your watch connected via Bluetooth to your phone? Go to Bluetooth settings on your phone to check

Hi thanks for your reply,

My watch only connects to Bluetooth when extremely close to my phone . And it shows no WiFi networks . Exactly the same as lars666 described .

Which phone and iOS version?
Did you try the steps outlined in the earlier post? Unpair/re-pair? Do other Bluetooth devices connected to your phone show issues? Do you have another phone you could try to connect your watch to?

Hi thanks for your reply
I have an iPhone 11 on iOS 14 and the watch is on 7.1 . I have tried al these steps including other phones. I also have an watch se which works fine with my iPhone . So i think it is an hardware issue

odd, but of course possible ... contact apple, if you have AC+ that would be beneficial

Hi Vincent,

my Apple watch was replaced by the Apple Store – it was indeed a hardware failure. Hope you're lucky to have your watch fixed!
