When you walk out of range from iphone the wearer is not alerted. User has to wake up watch to see the 'Disconnected from your iPhone' red icon. Example of icon can be seen here:
https://support.apple.com/kb/PH20765

This is big oversight for many reasons:
* security: protection against thief or pick pocket stealing iphone
* leaving iphone behind: because apple watch can handle many functions you feel connected by having watch on and don't feel like you are 'forgetting something' if you leave some place and also leave iphone behind.
* other smartwatch competitors have had this for a long time even pebble.

Pebble only connects over Bluetooth. Bluetooth connection lost, Pebble watch vibrates.

Apple watch uses Bluetooth AND WiFi for connectivity. Logic has to be put in place only to tap the user only if bluetooth and wifi connections are not present.

It's bad enough a Pebble only vibrates if your phone is like 25 feet away imagine if you had to wait for WiFi signal to break. Your phone would be long gone by the time you hit the max distance of the Wifi router.

It's apparently planned for a future update:

Given the Apple Watch’s reliance on an iPhone, Apple plans to implement Find my Watch via what’s currently known inside the company as “Smart Leashing.” According to a source, the Watch will use its wireless signal to establish its location relative to the iPhone, and will optionally be able to notify a user if the iPhone is accidentally left behind. “Apple wants to give [a user] a tap or a light notice if it thinks [he or she is] accidentally leaving [the] phone somewhere,” according to the source. The source cautioned that the Find my Watch and Smart Leashing features could be farther off than others in development, as they may require a more capable and independent wireless chip in a next-generation Watch.

Future is here :)
Any idea why "smart leashing" never saw the light of day?
I sent this to Apple as a suggestion

Should also have the “Find My IPhone” app so you can actually locate the phone from the watch. We already have “Find My Friends” on the watch. Hopefully this is added when they combine the two.

It's strange that smart leashing was announced four years ago in Series 1 and was never implemented.
Or it was and was pulled back?
I jumped the wagon with Series 4, so I miss a bit of history.
