just saw this on a youtube video and thought it was pretty interesting. I wonder if Apple plans to use the new USB-C for all its product lines this year (iPhone, iPad, etc.)

Check apples tech specs for the edition model. They include the apple watch charging cable, a charging box and a lightning to usb cable. No usb c cable.

Apple watch edition charging cases use USB-C

It's 100% Lightning. Why else would the Apple Store page for the Edition list a Lightning Cable as an included item? The employee just made a mistake.

Edit: whoops, too slow

If it's USB C, why does the edition come with a lightening cable, but not a USB C, who has one of them lying around?

I guess the apple employee in the video was an idiot and I was gullible for believing haha.

I should know by now to never trust apple retail employees as a source. lol

Yup, he probably got confused between the new MacBook and this.

What if...

USB C is backwards compatible with Lightning by Apple design?

As far as I can observe, they're close if not the same size, maybe someone that can go to an Apple Store can try plugging -- not all the way in-- in the new MacBook's power cable into their iPhone or iPad. They also are the only two established ports that come to mind that are fully reversible. And both were heavily developed by Apples hand.

Er, on second look, probably not at all. The receiver end of the USBC on MacBook seems to have a male piece inside it, whereas the receivers on all iPhones and iPads are completely female.

no its not, USB-C has a male connector inside the port itself.

I'd guess they wanted to make the cable inside the case permanent, and a lightning port made sense since you will already have this cable for your phone.

but this means apple is making a magnetic charging cable with a lightning port on the other end instead of a USB connector, maybe they'll sell us the cable separately down the road.

Do we think Apple will offer these charging cases for sale to the rest of us? I'm surprised they aren't already offered for sale in the Apple Store.

"That box was a designer achievement as well..."

how can Apple employee say those things without bursting into tear laughing.

ridiculous.

no its not i own both usb type c and lichtning devices and its so lichtning
So you dig up a thread from the basement to correct someone who was speculating before the :apple:Watch was even released?

Also it is a Lightning connection and not a lichtning connection.;)
