I currently have a Apple Watch Edition Series 7 Space Black Titanium which has the DLC coating and unmarked

I've been mountain biking with it for a year and totally unmarked. Is the Ultra screen tougher than the series 7 TI model and is the casing on the Ultra TI as good as the DLC Black TI on the series 7 ?

I've heard the Ultra marks very easy

I have the natural Ti version...so I cannot answer about the coating, but I can say the screen is just great... the only thing I am not sure of is the thickness of the screens between the two devices.

Do you change bands often?

I am really going back and fourth myself...the Edition 7 is a great device. It is light and sporty and can be dressed up easily with bands...the Ultra seems to be more of a sporting watch (obviously) but I have seen pictures with stainless/Ti and leather link bands, and I think it looks good.

No I've just ordered the Ultra after trying it on in the store. I was surprised how light it felt and with the trail loop brand felt fine on the wrist. But I can't decide I need it with the Series 7 TI I already have.

To be honest if I keep the Ultra I would sale the series 7 as I don't need 2 watches

My concern was how easy the Ultra case marks as a lot of people moaning on the internet about the TI finish.

Got it... I can say the finish is different on both...my series 7 can be lightly brushed with an appropriate pad to remove any surface blemishes, after seeing the Ultra, I cannot imagine a way to polish it, but I am sure you knew that.

I am in similar boat. Thinking of keeping Ultra and let my Series 7 Space Black Titanium Go.
Space black doesn't attract attention , while Ultra certainly attracts attention
I agree that Space Black Titanium is really good and zero scratches after rough year.

How you find the ultra compared to the series 7 TI

I like the ultra compared to the S7 natural Ti.

Although I'm not the market that everyone thinks the Ultra is for...
It's a watch, basically the same price as the S7, with a larger battery. I like the case (size, buttons, crown).

I sold my S7 on swappa for $500 (there was 1 minor scuff near the band "groove", and batt at 89% health).

I really like the battery life and brightness is nice when outdoors.

How you find the ultra compared to the series 7 TI
-Ultra. - Looks Better(Personal View), Slight weight increase, Easy to navigate watch screen

-S7 Ti/Space black - Light, goes well with dress . Perfect for Sleep tracking in addition to other used cases. Time trusted :) rugged device

I have been wearing the series 6 & 7 SBTi for the last few years. Best Apple Watch I have ever owned! I bought and got my Ultra opening day and loved it. BUT, after a few weeks I made the mistake of putting my SBTi back on and I knew my Ultra’s days were numbered. It’s on CL now and we will be parting company. The Ultra was a bit to big for my tastes, loved the flat screen, just a bit more than I wanted to put up with on my wrist.

Very disappointed that Apple quit doing the SBTi editions and have only aluminum and stainless.

I'm not tough on my watches, but I don't baby them either.

With the natural Ti S7 most of the minor blemishes can be polished out with a scrubber (the green part of those common household sponges).

So far so good with the Ultra. I wear it 24/7. Yard work, volleyball, etc...no marks so far :) knock on wood.

The DLC coating that Apple used on the SBTi and SBSS Apple Watches was insanely scratch resistant. My S4 SBSS doesn’t have a scratch on it after almost 4 years.

The Blasted Ti finish on the Ultra looks great and will withstand minor knocks, but it will scratch and scuff if you beat on it. I’ve hit my Ultra on edges of wooden tables and even scraped it on a metal door jam and it hasn’t scuffed yet, but having owned plenty of other Ti items I know they it will eventually. Honestly I’m not worried about it. In the EDC community they refer to them as snailtrails and I think the natural patina looks good.

‘I have hit my watch on so many door jams, knobs and other unidentified things, I cringe when I hear it hit and look at the watch expecting the worst and not even a slight scuff. After a year of heavy use, not even the slightest scratch. I am sold on DLC, wish I could apply it to myself!

I am essentially on the same boat. Except I have the stainless steel series 7. I purchased the Ultra with the intentions of returning it, but now I’m not entirely sure what to do. Every time I look at this watch on my wrist, I fall in love with the design. The same can also be said about my S7. I put it on the other night just to compare the two and I once again, fell in love with the design of the 7.

The ultra’s design and flat screen is what constantly gets me thinking about how much I enjoy this watch, however, I can’t help but notice that some watch faces (such as California and Contour) simply looking best on a curved edge to edge display like the series 7, in my opinion.

I have just a few days before I have to decide which watch I ought to keep.

But does the Ultra case mark easier ?
I don’t have any nicks that I can see on my Ultra that I’ve had since release day. I’m not doing anything that you’d expect damage, but I am a bit of a klutz, and I’ve banged it as usual on doorknobs and seatbelts and what-not. I’ll be wearing it in the garden, where I’m often elbow-deep in dirt. We go hiking … far, far from anything outrageous, but did I mention that I’m a klutz? It’s guaranteed I’ll whack it against a granite boulder as I walk past at some point. That sort of thing. Not remotely hard-core, but impacts are assured.

May I suggest?

Watch this:

Notice the quantity and character of the case damage after the watch was literally dragged behind a car down the road, sparks flying.

This is going to be entirely a matter of personal taste. But, for me, I’m expecting the watch to age very well, with the few-and-far-between nicks adding a welcome patina. Maybe I’ll even remember, “this one came when I went over the rapids in Oak Creek Canyon on an inner tube and almost hit my head on the big rock!"

This watch is meant to be used, and used hard. It should look good, but not like one of those Jeeps that’s never been anywhere more adventurous than the remote end of the shopping mall parking lot, and even then only on Wednesday mornings.

I’m not sure, but, if I had to guess, you may well be the type that prefers the out-of-the-box look of your well-cared-for S7. Which is exactly why Apple made that watch like that.

The Ultra is at least as well made, but with a different intended purpose.

(Then again, you might prefer the Ultra — just make a well-informed decision!)

Yeah with the battery life of the Ultra, I don't think I'll upgrade for a while.
The only thing that would make me upgrade would be some new sensors. I'd be interested in glucose monitoring and bp.

I just got back from checking out he AWU at the Apple Store. I had my S7Ti with me for comparison. I am on the fence about adding the AWU, and only want to do it if my 60 year old eyes can read the AWU better than the S7Ti.

So I set the brightness, test size, and text bold to the same setup I run on the S7Ti (Max Brightness, mid size, Bold on). Surprisingly the S7Ti was brighter that than the AWU. This was true when looking at the same watchfaces (configured the same way), and when viewing text messages.

I thought I was going nuts, and right then an employee came up, so I asked his opinion. He agreed with me and checked the settings on both watches to make sure they were the same. He couldn't explain why the AWU wasn't as bright as my S7Ti.

I tried one other AWU watch while I was there just to make sure the 1st watch wasn't defective. The 2nd AWU was the same as the first. The S7Ti was brighter than both AWU's.

Does anoyone know how/why this happened?

Weird. I came from the S4, which sometimes looked washed out in direct sun; otherwise, I never noticed the brightness. With my Ultra, it’s the same, save it doesn’t look washed out in direct sun; it just always looks fine.

All the watches do have an under-display brightness sensor that auto-adjusts based on ambient levels. I could easily imagine that “full brightness” indoors on the S7 is “gimme all ya got,” whereas on the Ultra it’s, say, just 60%. If so, you should be able to take both watches outside on a bright day, and see a very noticeable difference between the two under those conditions.

Based on the tech specs, you’re not going to want “gimme all ya got” indoors with the Ultra. I just turned on the flashlight for a moment (sitting at the kitchen table), and I really wouldn’t want to look at a watch face that bright.

Personally, I’d make the decision based on, “Is this as bright as I want it?” not on any comparison with something else.

I had the same experience. After getting it out of the store the AWU was visibly brighter than my S6SS, especially in sunlight.

A reddit thread suggested that the demo units have brightness caps. Kinda makes sense.

Thanks for the feedback and possible explanations. Both are good possibilities.

I have a Black S7Ti that I really enjoy and was considering buying a 2nd watch with a light color (Titanium or Stainless). I am considering a Natural S7Ti or the Ultra. I just don't know about the Ultra. I think the weight increase wont be worth the readability increase. I guess the only way I'll know is to buy one and return it if I don't like it enough. Since I have a nice S7Ti, I would have to really like the 2nd watch a lot to justify keeping it.

Thanks again for the info...
