Apple Watch exchange question

Okay, I'm sure the answer to this is no but here it goes anyway. Purchased an Apple Watch for my wife for Christmas and she would rather have a different color. In checking with Best Buy where I bought it, no one including the online store has her new color (Gold, Sport model) available.

I thought of just purchasing the new color at Apple and just returning the Best Buy one but Apple doesn't offer the $100. off price like BB does.

If the package is unopened would an Apple Store allow me to exchange it for a different color even though it was purchased at Best Buy? Thanks, thought it was worth a try.

You won't be able to swap out for a different model color (e.g., silver to gold). At least nobody has succeeded doing that for an iDevice short of returning it to the same store within the return period and re-purchasing the desired color.

Lesson learned: never assume knowledge of the wife's tastes.

Figuring this out must have saved me hundreds of dollars so far.
