I'm writing this in hope that Apple software developers are reading, and I wish there were swimmers among them...

I swim in a 50m pool with Swimming Masters, and trying my new Apple Watch - to see if it can be of any help. Masters swimming means that we do whatever set the coach is telling us to do. And some coach assignments confuse the Workout app.

1) Freestyle, fly or backstroke kick isn't recorded at all - because arms aren't moving. Breast kick is recorded. If I could tell the app that I always push from the wall, it could figure out I'm horizontal (hence doing kick, and count 50m as distance between the pushes.
2) 100m IM order (fly-back-breast-free, 25m each) is recorded as 200m because every time I change stroke the Apple Watch thinks I reached the end of the pool. There is no way someone can double the speed in the pool, therefore the Workout app should learn about my 50m timing in each style, and then figure out if I reached the end of the pool, OR simply changed swimming style.
3) Sculling distance could be measured like kick - from one push to another.
4) How can I measure and improve my swimming? I would suggest to count the number of strokes from wall to wall for every style, and report average, the worst and the best through every swimming session. I would monitor these numbers over time with the goal to reduce them.
5) Finally, there should be no problem to record rest stopovers, when I stand at the end of the pool with hands down, which is clearly a non-swimming position. Typically these stops are 10 seconds and up.
