Apple showed off a major new app coming to watchOS 5 later this year, called "Walkie-Talkie." Using the app, Apple Watch wearers will be able to send quick voice messages to friends and family members by speaking into their Apple Watch, similar to real Walkie-Talkies.

To start using the feature, users will have to allow a connection to one another in the app. After, it will show a scrolling list of connected friends, which you can tap, speak your message, and send to their Apple Watch. Apple said the main purpose of Walkie-Talkie is to act as a middle point between sending a text message and calling someone on Apple Watch.

Additionally, a watch-to-watch connection will work over cellular and Wi-Fi.

To me, this truly was what we envisioned the Apple Watch to be back during the dick Tracy days when he would talk to his watch, now we are to that point. Even though I may not utilize this feature, still fairly interesting.

Did your old walkie talkie fit on your wrist and also track your day and physical activity?
Why yes, I can get a walkie talkie that fits on the wrist. Why would you think otherwise? Why is that even a question? As for your random qualification of tracking your physical activity, why chose that characteristic and not one of the many other smartwatch features that aren't endemic of a walkie talkie? Why not chose 3D Touch or multi-choice watch faces? I mean they are all as unrelated to walkie talkie features as tracking physical activity.

“Can get?” You explicitly said walkie talkies you’ve ever used, while totally ignoring everything else they presented. That means you essentially complained for the sake of complaining. It’s almost as if you are going out of your way to tell the world how little interest you have in something.

If only i knew someone else with an AW that i'd want to set this up with! Although, i think this will be great for sending random inappropriate voice messages to people when they least expecting it for maximum embarrassment.

For my wife and I, both having Series 3 models with cellular. This is a game changer. Or being in different rooms of the house and not having to yell and wake the baby up.

I'm going to buy my wife an Apple Watch to use this feature and the new workout competitions. It's going to be so handy, especially on the weekends, to use Walkie Talkie mode to quickly communicate while wrangling children about the town. I just hope they have controls on when it can be used (like not during the day when I'm at work). I'd love to have it on weekends and evenings when running errands. Often times she has her hands full with the kids and I'm at the hardware store buying something for renovations and need her input. The immediate response would be great.

Way to miss the point completely. This app is nothing like a walkie talkie. Also, I ignore everything you presented because 1. it's irrelevant 2. doesn't contradict my earlier statement. That app is 100% not like any walkie talkie I've every used. There's nothing to disagree with there. Well 'cept the logic you used to disagree with it. You can add a 1000 features to the Apple Watch and the app still won't be like any walkie talkie I've ever used. Or anyone else for that matter. Just so that you're clear, we're discussing the app, not the watch. The app doesn't have tracking capability.

Why do you say it is nothing like a walkie talkie?

Wow. Who hurt you?

This is just sending an audio recording clip in imessage without having to click play or send I guess... not exactly revolutionary
