Apple Watch Interferes With Airpods

I have unpaired and repaired my watch with my iPhone 7 Plus. I also tried to reset the AirPods. What happens is I will start a phone call on my phone, more specifically speakerphone. Then I will decide that I want to use my AirPods. I will take them out of the case and put them in my ear. They will show as an option on the audio menu on my phone. But I do not receive the audible confirmation that they are connected. However when I put my watch on airplane mode and then try to connect to them again they will connect. Any ideas? I have tried toggling ear detection, mics, and handoff.
