Hi chaps

Really really keen to buy an Apple Watch, purely for the health side of things.

Trouble is i read its more or less useless without an iPhone. Is this true? i have the latest iPad but not an iPhone, and have no intention of buying one. I know we dont know for sure, but any ideas if Apple might plan to pair up the Watch with an iPad and not have to rely solely on an iPhone?

Seems pretty limiting at the moment.

You can't pair the watch with an iPad at this point; it does require an iPhone.

Under the 'add to bag' button on the apple site it says in the small print (and I think this should be a lot bigger and at the top to be honest)
Apple Watch Series 5 requires iPhone 6s or later with iOS 13 or later.

You must have an iPhone to even get started.

This depends on a person’s definition of “useless”. There are times where I leave my iPhone at home and just wear my Apple Watch series 4 (cellular) and I don’t regret it at all. Definitely not useless, in my opinion.

I’m not sure this will happen in the near future, if at all. The Apple Watch isn’t meant to be a stand-alone device, it’s meant to be a sort of “extension” of a more capable device. Since most people carry their iPhone everywhere more often than they would an iPad, it only makes sense for the iPhone to be the paired device.

However, since this type of conversation involves pure speculation, my opinion could be wrong.

Yes you need an iPhone to use the watch

it wouldnt bother me too much if i didnt have an iphone as im sure i could bluetooth my info up to my ipad to see. even if i cant do that, i cant even initially activate the thing!!!

revmacian -
i define it as useless without an iphone as i cant even set it up out of the box without one. totally useless in this instance. such a shame

I suppose the other question is this -

what do i need an iphone for? Can i use a friends to activate it and then not use one? What limitations does a gps watch have without an iphone?

then, what can i do with a gps Apple Watch that doesnt need a phone? Can i go on jogs, record my route, download the info to my ipad? Look at my steps, calories burned etc on my ipad via bluetooth?

is this possible?

is this possible?

I'll just make it short.

No.

An Apple Watch is tied to the phone it's paired with. You'd be updating your friend's Health app with your steps and activity. Not sure how good a friend he is.

Either buy an iphone or move on to alternative solutions such as a Garmin or Fitbit or Polar device.

Word. The Apple Watch is the best smartwatch for iPhone users, but if you don't have an iPhone, then it definitely isn't the best smartwatch or activity tracker.
